Id like to encourage you to join us in Hobart on the 7th and 8th of November for Tassie Ham-E-Con 2026. This is the premier Amateur Radio Conference of the year in Australia in fact, its the only true conference in VK this year; the others are all Hamfests. The theme is Hack the Ether: Education, Ingenuity, Connection, with four streams: Hack the Mind, Hack the System, Hack the Culture, and Hack the Future. Theres a strong line-up of presenters, including the True South forum, where theyll explore and debate the future of amateur radio. Its an event not to be missed. Bookings close at midnight tonight, so if you havent already, get in quickly and secure your place. Youll find the details on the Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmanias website. On another matter, the WIA Board has made the difficult decision to discontinue the WIA Email Redirection Service, effective 31 March 2027. This is in response to the increasing technical complexity, security requirements, and costs of maintaining reliable email forwarding. We recognise that the service has been valued by members over many years, and were providing plenty of notice so alternative arrangements can be made. A detailed letter will be sent to all members in the coming weeks explaining the reasons, the transition arrangements, and the steps members should take before the service closes. Finally, if youre heading to Albury over the weekend for the WWFF national gathering, please say hello to WIA President Scott Williams, VK3KJ, who will be manning the WIA stand there. Thats it from me. 73. USA A lobbying group representing homeowners associations across the United States recently met on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. to oppose the Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act. Community Associations Institute announced a number of federal priorities that the organization is interested in. Among them is the opposition of the Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act, stating the act "...would restrict the ability of community associations to require prior approval of amateur radio infrastructure." US Amateur radio operators are encouraged to contact their elected representatives in support of the Amateur Radio Emergency Preparedness Act. Additional information is available from the ARRL. IS THIS THE WAY TO AMARILLO? A NASA aircraft is conducting low-flying research flights over farmland near Amarillo, Texas, from Thursday, Oct. 22, through Monday, Nov. 9. These flights will measure gaseous and particulate emissions from animal feeding operations. Agricultural emissions represent an important but understudied part of Earths land and atmosphere systems. The mission known as FarmFlux will measure ozone, methane, ammonia, particulates, and other pollutants rising from crop lands and livestock farms and their interaction with the Earths atmosphere. Additional low-altitude research flights are scheduled for the March to July 2027 growing season in the Midwest and Californias Central Valley with a focus on cropland. These missions are jointly led by NASAs Goddard Space Flight Centre, Colorado State University and Boston University. science.nasa.gov/mission/evs-4/farm-flux/ MIT Scientists Have Developed a Paper-Based Battery You Can Swallow and this digestible paper-like battery that may pave the way for important advancements in the use of drugs and internal medical devices. The MIT team were investigating options for a battery that could be used to power electronic pills digested by a patient. After much research and investigation, they settled on a battery design that uses magnesium for one electrode and molybdenum trioxide for the other. Both materials reportedly break down in the body and are gradually absorbed in small amounts. Additionally, the battery design incorporates a biodegradable gel that allows charged particles to move between the electrodes, generating a source of power. And the battery is made from cellulose, which has a dissolvable, paper-like structure. When testing a fabricated version of the battery design inside the stomach of pigs, researchers found that the batteries retained useful electrical capacity, even after three days in the stomach. The next step for the MIT researchers will be to assess their technology in humans, with the eventual goal of launching clinical trials of swallowable tracking technologies. HOW LOW CAN YOU GO. 63 year old A Manatee County Mosquito Control District helicopter pilot, was killed when his Bell 407 crashed in Myakka City, FL, after striking what the Manatee County Sheriffs Office described as a 150 foot private radio tower. WirelessEstimator has determined that the towers at the site are amateur radio towers on property owned by a licensed amateur radio operator who runs an amateur radio tower and antenna installation business from the same address. According to the FCCs Universal Licensing System, Street holds an active amateur radio license, call sign K1TO. Investigators havent called it The NTSB said it was still determining whether the helicopter struck a tower, though WWSB reported tower damage in the area. Drone video showed one structure broken in half. Investigators are examining human, mechanical, and environmental factors, including Moores medical and training records; the aircrafts controls, transmission, and rotor system; weather and lighting conditions; and surveillance, drone, and FAA radar data. The Federal Aviation Authority warns pilots that many antenna towers at or below 200 feet are not marked, lit or charted as obstructions which means a 150-foot amateur tower in a rural area would not necessarily appear on the charts a pilot reviews before a flight. Nothing in the public record suggests the towers on Streets property were out of compliance. tinyurl.com/56sv2pmk UNITED KINGDOM The Marconi Centre at Poldhu gets World Origin Site Award: In 1900 the Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi undertook ground-breaking wireless experiments on The Lizard. With determination and vision, he developed technology on these remote Cornish clifftops that paved the way for todays instant worldwide communication. The historic site on The Lizard has been celebrated with a prestigious award almost 125 years after it sent the first radio signal. The Marconi Centre at Poldhu Cove has been named a "World Origin site", with a special plaque unveiled at a ceremony on October 17. This means the centre joins the ranks of other "world-first" sites -- including St Mary's Hospital, London, where Dr Alexander Fleming discovered Penicillin in 1928. He shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Ernst Chain and Australian Howard Florey "for the discovery of penicillin and its curative effect in various infectious diseases". NEW ZEALAND A recent news message from NZART President ZL2AJ Warren Harris reminds ZL operators, and I quote " Late last year we set a trial whereby amateurs could use SSB in a limited portion of the 10 MHz band, within certain rules. The trial period is coming to a close and NZART is seeking feedback from users of the 30 metre band, as to how the trial is performing, and whether or not a permanent change should be made to the band plan. It is worth reminding users that there are no prohibitions of SSB on 10 MHz in ITU, IARU or our General User licence, only that the band plan as it stands does not cater for it. The only other country that I can recall that permits SSB on 10 MHz is Australia. As such, one of the band plan rules we inserted was to limit the power output to 100 Watts, to minimise unwanted interference to other 10 MHz users around the world. If you have feedback, please send it the link in all text editions of this the WIA NATIONAL NEWS SERVICE. The grants, funded by an endowment established by noted DXpeditioner Lloyd Colvin, W6KG (SK), are intended to support amateur radio projects that promote international goodwill in the field of DX. The latest recipients are the upcoming VK9XY DXpedition to Christmas Island, an Australian external territory south of Indonesia scheduled for this November 16 through December 4 and the VPSG expedition to South Georgia Island, in the South Atlantic, planned for March 2027. Ten of the 12 VK9XY operators are under age 26, and the team leader is ARRL Education and Learning Support Specialist Max Freedman, N4ML, already a veteran DXpeditioner at age 22. But the truly unique aspect of this expedition are plans for up to 40 young hams to operate the station remotely from various parts of the world, using an internet-linked rig in a box, or R.I.B. ------------------------------------------------------------------- OPERATIONAL NEWS - -------------- -------------- NOW CONTEST WISE:- 2026 WIA contest page :- wia.org.au/members/contests/about/ ----------------- NOVEMBER 28-29 CQWW CW CONTEST ------------- DECEMBER 1-31 VK YOTA contest. yota.fgarc.org.au/pages/about.php ------------- DECEMBER 4-6 ARRL 160 METER CONTEST. ------------- DECEMBER 12-13 ARRL 10 METER CONTEST ----------------------------------------------------------------- NOW LET'S OPEN THE DX WINDOW TO THE WORLD - LETS TRY A LITTLE BIT OF EME HERE, as in EARTH-MARS-EARTH. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather) When Looking Skyward, Where Does Space Begin? There is no line where the atmosphere stops. It thins the way a beach gets wetter towards the sea, until at some point you are in the water and nobody can say exactly when that happened. So the edge of space is not something anyone discovered. It is something people chose, and they chose differently. For decades that disagreement cost almost nobody anything. It is now starting to. Tourist rockets fly into the disputed band with paying passengers and come back down. Hypersonic military vehicles pass through it. The question of which number is right has turned into a question about astronaut wings, ticket sales and, eventually, sovereign airspace. The familiar figure is 100 kilometres, the Krmn line. The FAI, the world air sports records body, uses it to separate aviation records from astronautics records. A 2023 FAI presentation by Nicolas Brend says the federation set it in 1960, with a group of scientists that included Theodore von Krmn, for separating aeronautics and astronautics records. The name came slightly earlier: Andrew G. Haley coined Krmn line in a 1957 paper after discussions with Krmn. That is what the 100 kilometre figure is, a records-keeping convention with a date on it. The American figure is about 80 kilometres. The US Air Force used it for its astronaut wings, and the Federal Aviation Administration used the same threshold for the commercial astronaut wings it handed out until it ended that programme after 2021. In 2005 NASA gave civilian astronaut wings to three X-15 pilots acknowledging their flights above 50 miles. When those flights happened only the military had wings to hand out, so civilian pilots flew just as high and got no badge. For a vehicle passing over another country at 90 kilometres, an agreed boundary could help determine whether it had entered sovereign airspace. Neither an astronaut-wings rule nor an air sports convention settles that question. (twiar) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - FINAL FRONTIER AMSAT-VK Secretary - secretary@amsat-vk.org A Russian satellite just took a very close look at an American spacecraft in low Earth orbit. The snooping satellite, Kosmos 2612, rendezvoused with ICEYE-X36, a commercial craft that observes our planet using synthetic aperture radar. The close encounter has been called a worrisome cat-and-mouse game. The rendezvous has garnered a lot of attention in space circles, because it was non-consensual and startlingly close; at one point, the two spacecraft may have been separated by just a few meters. There are about 80 ICEYE spacecraft in LEO at the moment. At least some ICEYE satellites are said to be providing imagery to Ukraine, which Russia invaded some 4 years ago. tinyurl.com/mtpx7p6b (ANS) The space around Earth is fast turning into a junkyard. Researchers think a refundable deposit scheme could force satellite operators to clean up their act before a tipping point is reached. In a paper published in the journal Nature Communications, a group of scientists propose a scheme that would require satellite operators to post a bond of $200,000 before launch, refundable with interest upon the completion of a successful deorbit. Companies that fail to remove their junk would lose the money, which could go toward a shared pool funding active debris-removal missions. tinyurl.com/3n2ferv4 (ANS) ARISS and the US space agency NASA have announced that they have renewed their partnership for another four years, bringing contact with the International Space Station to students worldwide. ARISS has signed a new agreement with NASA that will run through 2030 -- that makes 30 years of the ISS hosting an amateur radio payload encouraging lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. ARISS released a statement saying: "Together we'll continue creating opportunities for students and lifelong learners to connect with space exploration and discover the possibilities of STEM." The ISS is scheduled to be decommissioned by the end of 2030.
