BUT WAIT - THERE'S MUCH MUCH MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA AND IT'S FOR WEEK COMMENCING SUNDAY OCTOBER 25 2026 I'M EDITOR GRAHAM VK4BB WIA JOIN THE WIA tinyurl.com/yyj87b9y This is Justin VK7TW for this weeks WIA Board comment. Last week the WIA Board went out to affiliated WICEN and EmComm organisations with a draft of the WIA HF Land Mobile Emergency Communications Frequencies Policy and Authorisation Form for its two 5MHz (yes 60m) Land Mobile Frequencies. We have asked these organisations to comment on the arrangements that the Board wants to put in place to make these emergency frequencies available to affiliated WICEN and EmComm organisations. If you did not receive an email request from me back on the 14th October 2026 then let me know and I will forward the documents and email. Deadline for comment is the 30th November 2026. There will be a beta / soft release of the online VKCallbook that was showcased at a recent WIA Club Executives Webinar. There is some final tidying up of the website prior to release and the Board would like to take the opportunity to thank Hilary Bridel VK2AZ, David Burden VK3BDX and Tim Tuck VK2XAX who were instrumental in getting this feature rich and intuitive website developed. The WIA Board has made the difficult decision to discontinue the WIA Email Redirection Service, effective 31 March 2027, in response to the increasing technical complexity, security requirements and costs associated with maintaining reliable email forwarding in today's internet environment. The Board recognises that this service has been valued by members over many years and wishes to reassure those affected that sufficient notice is being provided to allow alternative arrangements to be made. A detailed letter will be sent to all WIA members in the coming weeks, explaining the reasons for the decision, the transition arrangements and the steps members should take before the service closes. If you are going to Albury to the WWFF national gathering next weekend then say hello to WIA President Scott WIlliams VK3KJ who is manning the WIA Stand at the gathering. wwffaustralia.com/2026-vkff-national-get-together.html Being a VK7 based Director - it would be remiss of me to not remind you of the Tassie Ham-E-Con Amateur Radio Conference that takes place on the 6th to 8th of November at the Sir Stanley Burbury Theatre - University of Tasmania - Sandy Bay Campus - Hobart with the theme of Hack the Future - Education, Ingenuity and Connection. This weekend will blow your collective minds! reast.asn.au/news-events/tassie-ham-radio-conference/ See you there! 73, Justin, VK7TW on behalf of the WIA BOARD NOW BACK TO MR FOUR BAKER BAKER AUSTRALIANA The Australian Space Agency says "G'Day Moon." Australia's first lunar rover -- that would be the Roo-ver -- met the public recently during World Space Week at the Queensland University of Technologys Lunar Testbed and Space Lab. This, Australias largest covered lunar testing facility, is located at QUTs Kelvin Grove campus. The AUD $7-million lab includes a lunar testbed designed to test planetary rover missions in realistic conditions, as well as space equipment such as sensing. Designed to withstand extreme lunar temperature swings from -246C to 121C, the vehicle features home-grown Aussie technology including specialized treaded wheels, thermal management systems, and tools to mitigate against lunar dust and radiation. Plans are to land the semi-autonomous vehicle at the lunar South Pole in 2030. The trip will take place under NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program. Roo-ver will make its journey aboard an Intuitive Machines lander and then conduct studies relevant to eventual human exploration under the Artemis programme. It is being designed and created by an industry consortium comprising universities, researchers, major companies and start-ups. ` (NewsLine and QUT centre for robotics) ------------------------------------------------------------* INTERNATIONAL NEWS is with thanks to Amateur Radio Daily, ARRL, DX-WORLD, eHam, Hackaday, IARU, IRTS, iTnews, NEWSLINE, NZART, RAC, Radioworld.com, RSGB, SARL and the World Wide sources of WIA. USA Online marketplace eBay has imposed new restrictions on listings of radio transmitting equipment in response to new FCC rules that took effect this week, but responded to ARRL that its new policy will not apply to gear that operates exclusively on amateur radio frequencies. The FCCs rules are intended to use its equipment authorization program to protect against national security threats to the communications supply chain and cover a wide variety of products. In its Third Report and Order issued on July 23, 2026, the Commission makes clear that online marketplaces share in the legal responsibility to assure that unauthorized RF devices are not offered for sale on their platforms. The rules took effect on October 13 Icom has received a Good Design Award for its latest ID-5200 transceiver. The Good Design Award judges outlined three reasons. Independent dials for left and right, enabling intuitive operation when receiving two waves simultaneously. Modern design centered on a colour touchscreen, blending seamlessly with car interiors. A separated main unit/controller structure and a variety of mounting options make it adaptable to any installation environment. The Good Design award describes itself as: Only comprehensive design evaluation and promotion mechanism in Japan. Together with G Mark, it has been recognized by a wide range of people for nearly 70 years, and has continued its activities to make people's lives and society better through design. INDIA An agreement between hams and officials in West Bengal, India, will make is easier for more people to receive intense training in disaster communications. Under this memorandum of understanding signed by the West Bengal Disaster Management and Civil Defence Department and radio amateurs, more people living in remote areas of that Indian state will be trained on how to pass emergency traffic during times of crisis. The president of the West Bengal Radio Club, Subir Datta, VU3ZSD, called the signing of the agreement "a proud moment," noting that it officially recognises amateur radio operators as lifesavers. The club's secretary, Ambarish Nag Biswas VU2JFA said that the club is known for its effective response during cyclones when the hams are called up by government officials. He said that rescue efforts benefit, especially in remote areas, when emergency traffic can get through. In cooperation with the affiliated Indian Academy of Communication and Disaster Management, the hams have already prepared many civil defence employees for their licensing exams and conducted mock-emergency drills. Although the West Bengal hams were also prepared to deploy recently after flash flooding devastated the region of Nepal near the Tibet border, he said the Nepalese government did not grant them the necessary permission. SOUTH EAST EUROPE Political Unrest in Albania Cuts Short DXpedition ZA/AE5X Ham radio operator John, AE5X, has gone off the air and left Albania early after days of anti-government riots and student protests rocked the capital, Tirana. He had planned to operate through October 30th from the country's Adriatic coast, including CW activity from the site of the former Radio Tirana transmitter. AFRICA OCTOBER 2026 HAM EXAM NEWS A total of 81 candidates sat the examination on the 10th October at registered examination centres. The results have already been released to candidates, with 66 candidates successfully passing the examination. Candidates who were unsuccessful are reminded that they may rewrite the examination in May 2027 at no additional cost. However, they must register for the examination again. WEIRD AND WONDERFUL Predictions of the future are often laughable when reviewed in the years for which they are made. For example, here in 2026 we neither live on the Moon, nor have flying cars. But sometimes they come closer to the reality than others, and in that the BBC Archive have an interesting offering. Its a feature from 2006 looking at the future of artificial intelligence, and since its main interviewee is Sir Clive Sinclair. Watching the video its a shock to be reminded that 2006 was twenty years ago, as in so many ways its close enough to touch. Back then we had laptops with Windows or Linux, we had the Web, and HDTV, as we do today. But as we sat in our Ford Focus family car it would be on a Nokia that we rang home; while technically a smartphone it was nothing like the Apple and Android devices that would take the world by storm in the following years. Sir Clive is positive about the development of AI as he saw it then, seeing it as providing knowledge based services such as education or healthcare from your computer. The following interviewee from British Telecom perhaps puts his finger on the pulse the most, predicting a path Over the next few years that seems pretty familiar to us a couple of decades later. So for once this is a future prediction that doesnt seem too outlandish. The video is packed with retro technology goodies, so its well worth a watch via the YouTube link in our text editions and shown on the bottom of the screen on your ATV transmissions. youtube.com/watch?v=sfjFKy0ZOiA ------------------------------------------------------------------- OPERATIONAL NEWS - -------- NOW CONTEST WISE:- 2026 WIA contest page :- wia.org.au/members/contests/about/ ----------------- THIS WEEKEND, OCTOBER 24-25 CQWW SSB The CQ WW DX SSB Contest runs from 0000UTC on Saturday the 24th of October to 2359UTC on Sunday the 25th of October. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather) Using NASAs Chandra X-ray Observatory, eROSITA, and LOFAR, scientists have observed a merging galaxy cluster nicknamed the treble clef due to its distinct, music-note-shaped radio emission. Researchers report in Astronomy & Astrophysics that it was likely generated and amplified by a violent collision between two galaxy clusters. Meanwhile Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics and international collaborators analysed joint observations of solar coronal mass ejections captured by Indias Aditya-L1 and ESAs Proba-3 satellites. By combining spectroscopic data from VELC aboard Aditya-L1 with imaging from ASPIICS on Proba-3, the cross-checked observations provided new insights into CME mass, density, thermal energy, and early-stage dynamics in the low solar corona. (arrl) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - FINAL FRONTIER AMSAT-VK Secretary - secretary@amsat-vk.org Six new amateur radio satellites built by three different AMSAT organizations were launched into orbit on October 1, riding aboard SpaceXs Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The AMSAT News Service reports that the group includes three PocketQubes from AMSAT-DL in Germany, two satellites from AMSAT-EA in Spain, and another PocketQube from AMSAT Nepal. The spacecraft travelled aboard OSSIE-D, the first orbital transfer vehicle developed by Spanish space transportation company UARX Space. Following separation from the Falcon 9 upper stage, OSSIE-D began deploying its collection of small satellites, giving the worldwide AMSAT community a particularly strong presence on the mission. (arrl) PARKINGS AT A PREMIUM. Five ( yes 5 ) spacecraft are currently docked at the International Space Station after a SpaceX Dragon cargo capsule arrived delivering over 6,300 pounds of scientific experiments, crew supplies, and roll-out solar arrays. Station crew members have begun transferring critical biological research and preparing for upcoming spacewalks on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5 to install the new solar arrays, while Roscosmos cosmonauts completed robotics and spatial orientation studies. (AMSAT) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - INTERNET - THE HAMS DOMAIN. PoPping In to 44Net Connect Back in the earliest days of the internet, a whole block of IP (internet protocol) addresses beginning with 44 was set aside for amateur radio use. Most of that block of addresses is still there and is managed by ARDC, Amateur Radio Digital Communications. In December of 2025, ARDC launched 44Net Connect, a service intended to make it easy for hams to begin using 44Net addresses for such things as experimenting with digital modes, improving repeater infrastructure, setting up a home lab, and more. In the ensuing months, more than 2000 users have signed up and ARDC is now expanding access by doubling its number of points of presence, or PoPs around the world, adding new ones in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Sydney, Australia (current ones are in Frankfurt, Toronto, and Dallas). A PoP is a physical access point that connects different networks. The additional PoPs will expand network capacity and bring nodes closer to users in different parts of the world, explained Rebecca Key, KO4KVG, ARDCs Communications Manager. This can shorten the distance data travels, reducing latency, and improving the overall experience. 44Net Connect gives licensed hams a simpler way to get a static 44Net IP address without a complicated setup, adds Key. Were seeing it used for everything from personal tinkering to club projects, education, and EmComm. You can find more information about 44Net Connect, including how to get started, in ARDCs introductory blog post. ardc.net/introducing-44net-connect-a-simpler-way-to-access-44net/ (ARRL) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RADIO AMATEUR OLD-TIMERS qcwa.org raotc.org.au Amateur radio operators who are students at an accredited college, trade school or university ANYWHERE in the world may be eligible for one of 19 scholarships from the Quarter Century Wireless Association. At the 44th annual conference of the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation, AMSAT, held in Jacksonville, local educator Gordon Gibby presented the schools' efforts. Students at Gainesville Christian Community School and The Rock School are learning the technical skills needed to build satellite-tracking systems and establish radio communications with spacecraft. AMSAT is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to advancing amateur radio satellite technology and education. Its resources and activities help make satellite communications a practical learning opportunity for students. And a reminder about our VK YOTA Contest in December!
