The third and final Club Governance Webinar will be held next Sunday the 18th of October at 5:00 PM AEDT. This WIA funded Webinar is provided to assist those clubs that are currently not Incorporated and wish to learn of the steps and many advantages of becoming Incorporated. This Webinar session will take about an hour to cover all steps and procedures including time for any questions you may have. An email was sent last week to all clubs providing the details of this webinar including the need to register your interest by return email to receive the meeting link if you wish to attend. If for some reason any club has not received the invitation and wishes to attend then they should contact me as soon as possible via email address: clubs@nationaloffice.wia.org.au Also, a reminder to all clubs to please check the accuracy of your clubs contact details on the WIA website to ensure that they are in fact up to date. Any Clubs that have recently held their Annual General Meeting and have subsequently made changes to their executive committee are urged to reflect those changes on their WIA Club webpage as soon as possible. By doing so, the WIA can ensure that the right person at your club receives all regular communications from the WIA on time. If you need any assistance with updating your clubs WIA Webpage or any other WIA Affiliated Club matters, as always, please dont hesitate to contact me, VK2NWT. This has been Angelo VK2NWT for WIA National News. Hello people. Once again, this is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH, Editor in Chief of Amateur Radio magazine. After all my palaver last week about the story of AR magazines delivery far and wide, lo and behold, but some members reported its arrival last Tuesday and Wednesday! A-may-zing! Im sure more of you will have your Issue 6 in-hand shortly. Patience is rewarded, said Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet. Well, something like that. As the theme for Issue 5 is Dedications and Obsessions, for all you sailors, seniors and shortwave listeners, theres probably no greater dedicated obsession than the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, which hits the high seas on Boxing Day. If you cant be on board for this years event, the next best thing is to listen-in to the crews on the HF bands, or on VHF if youre within coo-ee of either port. We have all the details you will need. In addition, we have a tribute to Phil Harmon VK6PH, ex-VK6APH and G3WXO, now a silent key. Phil was for so many years a developer and promoter of software defined radio, known globally for his in-depth expertise and wide-ranging knowledge. The art and science of SDR would not be so advanced as it is if not for Phils dedication to the technology. To go with our cover feature on the practical measurement of you station EMR, it is not coincidental that Dr George Galanis VK3EIP graces AR with an article dedicated to AFL, the ACMA, amateur radio, EMR and STEM! To help readers digest Georges latest article, we have included a few words on Greek mythology. And a cartoon to help with that. And to cap it all off, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of broadcast television in Australia. Hands up those who recall September 1956! Just in time for the Melbourne Olympics. But wait, hams had long beaten the broadcasters in putting television on-air in Australia. We have the details and the photographs to prove it! You know whats coming now theres much, much more in Issue 5 of AR magazine. More guts. Less gab. Proudly produced and printed in Australia, by amateurs for amateurs. Issue 5 electronic edition is now online. Before I go, I confess to misleading everyone last week. I said that Issue 6 was being distributed instead of Issue 5. AND, I said our new Publications Committee member, Michelle Hall VK4SHE would have her name added to the Page 3 list in Issue 7. Theres no Issue 7 . . . this year, anyway. Thats all from me. This has been Roger Harrison VK2ZRH. ------------------------------------------------------------* INTERNATIONAL NEWS is with thanks to Amateur Radio Daily, ARRL, DX-WORLD, eHam, Hackaday, IARU, IRTS, iTnews, NEWSLINE, NZART, RAC, Radioworld.com, RSGB, SARL and the World Wide sources of WIA. EUROPE UN AGENCIES MAKE PLEA FOR STRONGER RFI SAFEGUARDS This item from Geneva, where two United Nations agencies have made a plea for governments to protect public safety through tougher protections against radio spectrum interference. The ability to monitor climate, forecast weather and deliver early warning messages faces critical disruption because the same radio frequencies these systems use are increasingly occupied by some satellites and wireless systems, according to two United Nations agencies. At a meeting held in Geneva, the International Telecommunications Union and the World Meteorological Organisation said that such spectrum interference increasingly imperils the study of and the public response to environmental dangers. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, secretary-general of the ITU, told the meeting that "Preventing harmful radio interference is a matter of public safety and can save lives." The agencies said that the accuracy of measurements and other data and the ability to prepare for dangers could be seriously compromised. RSGB President delivers membership presentation in Italy RSGB President Bob Beebe, GU4YOX visited ARI Alba Section, an amateur radio club based on Northern Italy. His nephew is the Secretary of the ARI branch and invited Bob to speak. Proficient in Italian, Bob delivered a presentation on the RSGB, international membership and the importance of international co-operation in amateur radio. Feedback from members was positive, with the evening being enjoyed by all. tinyurl.com/2uxr5ctw Ukrainian/Polish Radio Club Celebrates Centennial The Lviv Shortwave Club, or LKK, known as the cradle of Polish amateur radio, is celebrating its centennial in 2026 with special anniversary call signs and commemorative certificates, as well as a ceremonial meeting taking place later this month. If you look at a map of Europe, youll see that the city of Lviv is actually in Ukraine, and the club is based there as well. But before the border changes that occurred at the end of World War II, Lviv was in Poland. The culmination of the anniversary celebrations will be a ceremonial meeting which will take place in the main hall of the Lviv Polytechnic National University, the largest university in Ukraine, as part of the International Conference on Advanced Trends in Radioelectronics and Infocommunications (ATRIC-2026) on October 15-17. In an acknowledgement of the ongoing hostilities between Ukraine and Russia, it is noted by UR5WHT and K1CC that the hall is equipped with a bomb shelter, which allows the ceremony to proceed safely even in the event of an air raid alert. UNITED STATES Peter Nowinski, W3LIX, of Pennsylvania, was honoured by the Antietam Radio Association and the family of Steve Struharik, WA8EIH (SK), of Myersville, Maryland, for his response to events that led to the discovery of Steves sudden passing on May 27, 2026. WA8ETH was net control of the groups weekly Four-States Net when he suddenly stopped responding to check-ins. After repeated calls on the radio and to his cellphone went unanswered, the local sheriffs office was asked to make a welfare check. That was delayed due to other calls, so Peter, W3LIX drove 45 minutes to Stuhariks home to check on him. He arrived at the same time as the sheriffs deputy. Steves wife, Jean, answered the door, having no idea there might be a problem. Peter and the deputy went to Steves shack and discovered that he had passed away in his chair. Through his incredible compassion and selflessness, Peter was there in Steves familys hour of need, said Maguire, adding that Steves family had a Special Service Award plaque made for Peter, which was presented at the clubs August meeting. VOA Still Costs $1.6 Million Weekly After Trump Administration Cuts. More than a year after the Trump administration moved to dismantle Voice of America, the U.S. international broadcaster continues to cost taxpayers millions of dollars despite the near-total suspension of its operations, Fortune reports. VOA is one of six entities overseen by the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). The digital, web and mobile news organization broadcasts in 49 languages and previously reached more than 361 million people worldwide. In March 2025, President Trump ordered USAGM to eliminate what his administration described as unnecessary functions and reduce remaining operations to the minimum required by law. The resulting cuts placed hundreds of VOA employees on administrative leave and sharply reduced broadcasting. By July 2026, approximately 420 VOA employees remained on paid administrative leave at an estimated cost of $1.6 million per week, or about $82.8 million annually, according to a report from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). tinyurl.com/yvay8hn6 ------------------------------------------------------------------- OPERATIONAL NEWS - -------------- -------------- NOW CONTEST WISE:- 2026 WIA contest page :- wia.org.au/members/contests/about/ ----------------- THIS WEEKEND:- OCEANA CW CONTEST is OCTOBER 10 - 11 ------------- This weekend OCTOBER 10-11 is also the running of the 67th Scandinavian Activity Contest SSB. Newsline says South Africa's MeerKAT radio telescope has detected repeated bursts of radio signals coming from the Beta Pictoris planetary system and have traced it to a strong magnetic field surrounding the giant planet. Researchers say that these are the first auroral radio emissions in history to ever be detected from an exoplanet. The significance of the discovery, which the researchers published two weeks ago, means that researchers have found a way to measure the magnetic field of a young planet which, until now, was only theoretical. For WIA National News, I am Alan, VK2COD in Sydney. Now back to you Graham VK4BB VK DMR Network Supports Jamboree On The Air 2026 Amateur radio clubs and groups participating in *Jamboree On The Air (JOTA)* this October are being invited to make use of dedicated talk groups on the VK DMR network to establish contacts with Scouts and Guides across Australia and beyond. For more than a decade, the VK DMR network has provided an opportunity for amateur radio operators to connect youth members during the JOTA weekend, providing an additional way for participants to experience the excitement of communicating by radio. Following the recent transition of the VK DMR network from the IPSC2 platform to the new *IPSC3 server*, the VK DMR Working Group has agreed to again provide dedicated JOTA talk groups. *JOTA talk groups TG30 to TG39 will be active from Friday 16 October through to Monday 19 October 2026.* * *TG30* JOTA calling channel * *TG31 to TG39* JOTA chat/TAC channels The talk groups may also be available earlier in the week for testing. To help participating stations obtain the best possible experience, information has been prepared by a member of the *St George Amateur Radio Society (SGARS)* outlining recommended DMR configurations for JOTA stations. This information which is available on the SGARS website www.sgars.org, can be used by operators to configure their radios ahead of the weekend. The VK DMR Working Group will monitor the use of the JOTA talk groups throughout the weekend and subsequently review their use and potential availability for future JOTA events. So, if your club or group is participating in JOTA this year, please make use of the VK DMR JOTA facilities. *Use them or lose them!* This is a great opportunity for amateur radio operators to introduce young people to the excitement of digital radio and to help create contacts between JOTA stations across Australia. By international standards, they have been small, but you never know when and where a bigger one will surprise you. You can keep a close eye on them with your phone, using the free "Seismoscope" app. The "2026 Great Shake Out" is an Amateur Radio exercise designed to test our ability to communicate after a natural disaster, in this case a simulated earthquake. The exercise is organised by ARES in northeast Los Angeles County in California, but is open to Amateurs worldwide. In the exercise, you send a "Did You Feel It?" report to the United States Geological Survey, indicating the level of fictional earthquake damage experienced at your location. These communications are done using Winlink, preferably via radio to an RMS gateway, as you would if local phone and internet services were disrupted in your area. If you haven't used Winlink before, this would be a great time to try it out! Or maybe you could send a report by other means to a Winlink operator who could relay for you There's also a "preparedness" survey, an Earthquake Preparedness Guide, and a quiz, to help you be better prepared for a real emergency if and when it occurs. The Great Shake Out exercise takes place this Wednesday 15 October at 10:15am your local time. Traffic related to the exercise can be sent any time until 19 October at 0000 UTC. It is free to install and use over APRS-IS. Connecting a radio and several advanced features are part of APRS Connect Pro, a subscription with a 7-day free trial. APRS OTA, the on-the-air activity that runs entirely over APRS, has its own screens in the app, so you tap buttons instead of typing bot commands. Hosts go on the air in one tap. Each chaser's call arrives with their message, where they are and a Confirm button. A bar across the top shows QSOs, points and time left, with buttons to stay longer or message every chaser at once. A live map shows you and your chasers and adds up how far your contacts have reached. Chasers get the list of hosts on the air, tap one to call, and watch each step through to the host's QSL. Every op is saved with its map and scores and can be shared as a picture. Chasing works over APRS-IS, free. I was saddened to receive the news that Terry had passed away in September 2026, after a brief illness. Terry was one of the early experimenters in amateur radio Internet linking. My first contact from Terry was a brief e-mail in May of 2002, in which he expressed interest in a new software package known as EchoLink: "May I try it?" That was the start of a 24-year working relationship with Terry, who became the senior most system administrator and a tireless volunteer, putting in many hours of work to validate new users and generally keep the system running. You might already know that one of the most time-consuming support tasks is validating new users, to ensure the security of the system. A breathtaking statistic is that Terry manually reviewed and approved 236,890 callsign submissions during his tenure as an EchoLink system administrator -- nearly 10,000 per year. He also authored several online how-to articles about EchoLink software setup and configuration. For his long-standing volunteer administration work on EchoLink, Terry was awarded a President's Commendation by the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA). Based in a northern suburb of Sydney, he was a member of the Manly-Warringah Radio Society (VK2MB). I will miss Terry's dedication and optimism; he was a true gentleman, and a tireless advocate for Amateur Radio. RIP Terry VK2JTP Original AU EchoLink Facilitator now Silent Key.
