2026 OCTOBER 4 WIA NATIONAL NEWS BROADCAST ON VK1WIA ------------------------------------------------------------* THE BEST NEWS YOU'LL GET ALL WEEK THIS LINK IS A VIDEO VERSION OF NEWS COMPILED BY VK5BD BEVAN tinyurl.com/WIA-News-Videos ------------------------------------------------------------* IN WIA NATIONAL NEWS THIS WEEK:- ALTHOUGH NO NEWS FROM THE DESIGNATED DRIVER, er WIA DIRECTOR, WE DO HAVE WIA MAGAZINES EDITOR IN CHIEF ROGER VK2ZRH and also are joined by VK2COD, VK4JPM and VK7PD. NOW WAIT - THERE'S MUCH MUCH MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA AND IT'S FOR WEEK COMMENCING OFFICIALY ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 4 2026 I'M EDITOR GRAHAM VK4BB WIA JOIN THE WIA tinyurl.com/yyj87b9y Hello people. This is Roger Harrison VK2ZRH, Editor in Chief of Amateur Radio magazine. May the fourth be with you. This being broadcast on the 4th of October for the 1 st time. In the morning. Or the 2nd time, if in the evening. Get your ears on because Im here to tell you. So listen up. Sometime last week, which began last Monday, rather than what they told you at the top of this broadcast. But Im not here to split hairs. As I began, some days ago, Issue 6 of Amateur Radio magazine was all stitched up, folded and trimmed to fit those see-through plastic bags in which its mailed, packed into boxes to go to the mailing house and the newsagency distributors. At some later time, the mailing house slips our magazine into those see-through plastic bags along with an address label and then its off to the post office. Happy days! At about the same time, the newsagency distributor trucks AR magazine across this wide brown land to newsagencies in post codes where we know hams live. More happy days! When you get that Issue 6 in your hands, think for a moment what it went through to get there. I promised in the last issue, in print there, on page 3, that Issue 6 would be about Dedications and Obsessions. When you get that Issue 6 in your hands, you may think that I lied. In print. On page 3. Because the cover does not reflect that. At all. It features a pair of . . a pair of . . probes . . or sensors . . or wands . . that you can make yourself to measure your stations electromagnetic radiation your E M R and thus determine, by measurement, whether you comply with the regulations, or not. No need to guess whats happening using mathematical methods and hope youve got it right. Or just ignore the issue and hope for the best. Author and home constructor, Craig Harrison VK2ACH (no relation) just happens to be in the test and measurement business and came up with these simple DIY wands. Elsewhere in this issue, a couple of six metre band tragics wax lyrical about their obsessions, and Lou Destefano VK3AQZ completes his Foundation class 80 & 40 metre transceiver project. You know I just have to say theres much, much more in Issue 6 of AR magazine. Before I go, a heartfelt welcome to a new member of the Publications Committee, Michelle Hall VK4SHE. Her name will be added to the list on Page 3 of Issue 7. AR magazine. More guts. Less gab. Proudly produced and printed in Australia, by amateurs for amateurs. Also online. Thats it people. This has been Roger Harrison VK2ZRH. AUSTRALIANA The Australian Communications and Media Authority has published indicative processing timeframes for amateur radio applications, providing welcome clarity for new amateurs, operators upgrading their qualifications, accredited assessors and amateurs applying for callsigns. eHam publication from the US goes on to say " For the amateur community, the published targets provide a much clearer picture of what happens after an examination or application reaches the ACMA. Examination results are normally processed within two weeks of receipt from an accredited assessor, recognition certificate applications within 15 working days, and callsign applications within 10 working days. Recognition of Prior Learning decisions can take up to four months, while applications to become an accredited assessor can take up to six months. ------------------------------------------------------------* INTERNATIONAL NEWS is with thanks to Amateur Radio Daily, ARRL, DX-WORLD, eHam, Hackaday, IARU, IRTS, iTnews, NEWSLINE, NZART, RAC, Radioworld.com, RSGB, SARL and the World Wide sources of WIA. EUROPE The World Radiosport Team Championship says its 2026 awards ceremony will be held in Croatia this weekend on October 3rd, following the judging committee's decision to strip 2 teams, including a UK team of its title over a multiplier fraud scheme and re-score the results. Amateur Radio Newsline reports the ceremony will formally recognize the revised standings after the rescoring controversy roiled the contesting community. Awards are to be presented to the top three winning teams - MB5O, MB4G and MB1T - placed first, second and third respectively. The 27th General Conference of IARU Region 1 has concluded in Austria. After five days of committee sessions, working group meetings, and plenary votes. Hosted by the Austrian national society, in the year of its 100th anniversary, the conference drew more than 120 delegates representing 38 member societies, along with the IARU Administrative Council, including representatives from Regions 2 and 3. In addition to adopting a new budget and a slate of recommendations, the conference elected the regions officers for the coming three years. Hans Blondeel Timmerman, PB2T, was elected President, with Dennis Green, ZS4BS, as Vice President. UN-Day 2026 transmission. On October 24th 2026, SAQ is scheduled to air a message to the World, promoting Peace, Unity, and Global Partnerships. The Grimeton Radio Station welcomes all visitors to attend the transmission, in person OR via their YouTube channel 12:20 UTC Oct 24 UN DAY. The site is an outstanding example of the development of telecommunications and is the only surviving example of a major transmitting station based on pre-electronic technology. youtube.com/channel/UC-83S-l9JKD1iuhsXx3XQ3g MIDDLE EAST IARU frequency for satellite declined Bahrain Space Agency. A 3U CubeSat carrying a camera system, an in-house avionics board with encryption and AI image-processing experiments, and a beacon transmitting the Bahraini national anthem and a quote from the King of Bahrain for amateurs to collect. The satellite was launched on SpaceXs Transporter-14 mission in March 2025; coordination was not requested until July of that year. USA Cape Canaveral Spaceport will receive laser weapons to combat drones. The busiest U.S. spaceport is expanding its counter-drone defences beyond jamming to include systems capable of physically destroying unmanned aircraft. The military is bringing electronic jamming, automated airspace surveillance, and weapons together into a unified defence system. The upgrade comes amid an increasingly busy launch schedule and unauthorized drone flights in the area. ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio in the USA is following two new federal proceedings concerning radio frequency exposure. On September 17 the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services initiated parallel comment periods on RF safety issues. Neither inquiry changes the current FCC RF exposure rules that apply to all radio amateurs but could lead to changes in later proceedings if the current rules are found to be deficient. The FCCs Public Notice is narrowly focused on specific RF exposure issues remanded to the Commission in 2021 by the U.S. Court of Appeals. The Commission emphasizes that it will give particular weight to submissions reflecting specialized expertise in health and safety matters. The HHS Request for Information broadly seeks evidence and information concerning the potential health effects of EMFs, RF radiation, and wireless technologies. Comments on the HHS inquiry are due October 21, with comments on the FCC issues due by October 22. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act (S. 315) has enough Senate cosponsors to beat a filibuster, but trade press says it will likely miss a floor vote before the October 4th deadline. That pushes it into a mid-November or December session. The House passed its version, H.R. 979, on September 15th. The next AMSAT Students on the Air activity day is Tuesday, October 6. Students on the Air activity day encourages licensed student operators to make satellite contacts on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and asks the wider amateur satellite community to make a special effort to welcome young operators onto the satellites. ------------------------------------------------------------------- OPERATIONAL NEWS - -------------- -------------- NOW CONTEST WISE:- 2026 WIA contest page :- wia.org.au/members/contests/about/ ----------------- THIS WEEKEND:- OCTOBER 3-4 OCEANA SSB CONTEST AND OCEANA CW CONTEST is OCTOBER 10 - 11 ------------- OCTOBER 10-11 is the running of the 67th Scandinavian Activity Contest SSB. Hubble was designed for about fifteen years of operation, but it has now been working in orbit for its thirty-sixth year. During this time, Hubble has travelled more than 8 billion km. The average distance to the Moon is 384,000 km, so that distance would be enough for 10,000 round trips. The total number of observations has exceeded 1.7 million. On the anniversary day, scientists used it to search for a supernova whose light is being warped by the gravity of a distant galaxy cluster. A second image of this explosion will help refine measurements of how quickly the Universe is expanding. (universemagazine) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - BALLOONS ZS6WBT-1 is now well into its second orbit of the Earth, having travelled an impressive 56 314 km over its first 38 days. When tracked to the northeast of Australia, it was reporting an altitude of 15,86 km and travelling at approximately 48 km/h. Conditions at altitude remain decidedly chilly, with a temperature of 48C, while its solar panel is reporting a healthy 4.35 Volts. ZS6WBT-10, launched on Wednesday, 16 September, produced just a single reception report after launch. That spot indicated an altitude of 17,46 km - a remarkable achievement and a record altitude for both a South African pico balloon and a Windreiter balloon. Unfortunately, no further reports have been received and ZS6WBT-10 has remained missing in action ever since. (sarl) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - DIGITAL. WSJT-X 3.2 Brings New JTTY Mode for RTTY Contesters A release candidate of WSJT-X 3.2 introduces JTTY, a new keyboard-to-keyboard digital mode built to give RTTY contesters the familiar feel of traditional RTTY with better weak-signal performance. The mode uses a four-tone GFSK waveform in about 127 Hz of bandwidth and can reach contest speeds around 60 words per minute, and it already integrates with N1MM Logger+ (newsline) A new open-source digital voice mode called RADE, short for Radio Autoencoder, is drawing comparisons to the historic shift from AM to single sideband on HF. Built by the FreeDV project, RADE pairs machine learning with traditional signal processing to deliver clearer speech in half the bandwidth of SSB, and it can already be added to FlexRadio transceivers as a downloadable module. ARRL reports radio manufacturers are beginning to take notice as the mode's development continues toward an even narrower version 2. Alex, VK4AJF earned his foundation amateur radio qualification. What makes this special is Alex is 10 years old! He is also the only cub scout in Queensland to hold an amateur radio licence! Alex just beat me! I was 10 when I passed the foundation exam and just turned 11 when I was issued my callsign. So a special congratulations goes out to Alex from me! As some of you know, I am a scout with 1st St Andrews in Hume Region. The other weekend the Region held its once a year camp called Humeoree at Glenfield for their Regions 80th birthday. At that camp amateur radio was alive! Myself and Adam, VK2GAK kept in contact with each other and Tim VK2FACF. Adam then got a number of scouts together from Appin, St Andrews and Blaxland. They played against Tim and Leumeah scouts in a game of battleships on air! The game had to cease as the campfire was roaring and the disco started. I heard that the game will continue on air later to get a winning group as there are still ships afloat! For WIA National News, I am Alan, VK2COD in Sydney. Now back to you Graeme WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - RADIO SCOUTING I'm John VK4JPM Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club with this update. JOTA/JOTI season is fast approaching, and the Darling Downs Radio Club is working with a number of Scouts and Guide groups around the region to support this well regarded gateway to the hobby of a thousand hobbies. Dave VK4JPS and Perry VK4PER are putting together a number of activities to be run over the period of 16-18 October, including a 40m station to talk to the relatively close and eastern seaboard contacts; and an FT8 station that will work the bands and try to demonstrate changing propagation throughout the day - using grid tracker for some visuals. We'll show how you can use a simple Arduino Nano to decode CW and using a flashing LED to send a message. We'll also have a workbench to encourage hands on-learning, with a multimeter and voltage dividers to learn about ohms law in a practical way. Our aim is to not only show amateur radio at work, but to encourage the guides and scouts to learn from the experience. If you have any other great JOTA activities you can suggest email, us at education@ddrci.org.au and we'll see if we can add them to out agenda. Or if one of the activities we've described gets your interest, and you'd like to know how we plan to run it, email us and we'll let you know. Education@ddrci.org.au I'm John VK4JPM, for the Darling Downs Radio Club. Jamboree on the Air, the annual worldwide Scouting event promoting friendship and global citizenship via amateur radio, will be held October 16-18, 2026. Satellite demonstrations have long been a crowd favourite at JOTA stations a handheld, an Arrow antenna, and a pass of an FM bird can introduce a whole troop to amateur radio in space in under fifteen minutes. Details are jotajoti.info/ [ANS] WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RESCUE RADIO wicen.org.au facebook.com/WICENNSW x.com/wicennsw groups.io/g/vk4-emcomms A compact radio cheat sheet that was shared online could make the equipment more practical in an emergency. On Reddit's r/preppers community, a poster shared a one-page guide that pulls together several kinds of radio shorthand, including the Western Union Telegraph 92 Code, amateur radio Q codes, phonetics, prosigns, and a basic emergency listening schedule. A radio would be useful in the kind of situations preppers plan for. These can include something as drastic as the total breakdown of society, but common incidents like short power outages and severe weather conditions that make travelling outside difficult are also concerns. In the latter cases, a radio could still be used to receive updates or send for help if phone lines are down. tinyurl.com/wdm8jn2t (eHam) WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- SOFTWARE FOR HAMS OrbitDeck for iOS, a comprehensive amateur satellite tracking application for iPhone and iPad, is now available on the Apple App Store. Developed by Paul Stoetzer, N8HM, the app runs natively on both iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later, and its source code is published on GitHub. At its core, OrbitDeck computes live look angles, range, range rate, sub-point, and footprint for any satellite, along with next-pass predictions featuring quality scoring and elevation profiles, a daily schedule of every favourite satellites passes ordered by AOS, multi-day pass progressions, a full ground-track map, an all-sky radar showing every favourite at once, an animated 3D globe, and a polar sky plot marking AOS, LOS, and direction of travel.
