However, Chanel 9 was NOT the first on-air with electronic broadcasting of television - it was a hoard of hams in Melbourne and Brisbane that beat the barons of broadcasting. The story is told - in detail - in Amateur Radio magazine, issues two and three in 2022. The two-article series, titled "Unsung pioneers of TV technology in Australia " tells how Melbourne mother Phyl Moncur became the first face broadcast on television in Australia. Phyl was married to Len Moncur VK3LM, who home-brewed a TV transmitter and had played with what was known then as Cathode Ray Television. Phyl and Len were the parents of well-known Hobart ham, Rex Moncur VK7MO. It is rumoured that 'young' Rex kept his father's homebrew vidicon camera and oscilloscope display, for the sake of posterity. Could one hope, then, to see photos of this generational gear in an upcoming issue of Amateur Radio magazine? In VK4 TV came in 1929. 4CM was experimenting, then 6th May 1934, they gave a demonstration to Federal and State politicians and then granted the FIRST TV licence for Australia. 1935 when Tom Elliott VK4CM broadcast TV signals on 136 meters ((around 2.2MHz)) from the 'old windmill' up on Brisbane's Wickham Terrace. Transmitted in this case were first pictures, Mickey Mouse then the smiling face of then film star Janet Gaynor. Subsequent Television transmissions were received up on the Darling Downs (144kms) and indistinctly but observed in Melbourne Sydney in 1933 was experimenting, the Waverly Amateur Radio Club, 2BV televised from North Bondi to Waverly, Adelaide's 5DN had an application for a television licence rejected in 1929 and sadly, in Melbourne Ross Hull died in 1938, by electrocution off his experimental television equipment. WRTC 2026 - THE FALLOUT CONTINUES. In an unprecedented move for the World Radiosport Team Championship, the judges of the prestigious event have overturned this year's results. The judges said that they discovered that fraudulent means, including use of pirate stations, were used to boost some scores - including those of the winning team. Organizers said they were making the announcement "with sadness and disappointment." They added that: "WRTC has strived to be a competition where the outcome is based on the competitors performance, and is not a function of offsite helpers assisting their competitor friends." Furthermore, reviewing logs for the WRTC-2023 held in Italy, the WRTC organizers detected the same fraud scheme and raised the possibility that the Bologna event would be rescored too. A detailed rescoring report, the new results and disqualifications can be found on wrtc2026.org/ As previously reported:- The International Amateur Radio Union Region 3 Executive Committee has concluded its 2026 annual meeting in Tokyo, setting priorities for amateur radio across the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting addressed spectrum protection, preparations for WRC-27, band planning, interference, emergency communications, youth development and greater cooperation between IARU Member Societies. Importantly for Australian amateurs, Oscar Reyes VK3TX is a member of the IARU Region 3 Executive Committee, ensuring an Australian voice is directly involved in these regional discussions. Spectrum featured prominently. The Executive Committee approved a revised interim Region 3 40-metre Band Plan, following approximately five months of consultation, while also considering VHF and above band planning, beacon coordination and spectrum monitoring. EMC issues included HF interference from power-line communications, emissions from large LED displays and possible interference and harmonics from wireless power-transfer systems. T Youth engagement, training and preparations for a 2027 Region 3 YOTA Camp and Region 3 Conference in Bali were also discussed, along with upcoming ARDF championships. Some citizens, in the Russian Federation, thoughtlessly or deliberately, spread misinformation about the allocation of a radio frequency band near 50 MHz to radio amateurs, while referring to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation called "On Approval of the Table of Distribution of Radio Frequency Bands between Radio Services of the Russian Federation". The Union of Amateur Radio of Russia informs that the appearance in this table of reference for the amateur service requires further determination of the procedure for the use of the radio frequency band 50080-50280 kHz. The only change adopted recently and related to the issue under consideration was a tenfold increase in the amount of the fine for individuals for violations in the field of the use of radio frequencies. (see the relevant article of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation dated 30.12.2001 No. 195-FZ). The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act is headed for a standalone vote in the House the week of Sept. 14, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise announced. Scalise said the legislation had previously been attached to another must-pass bill, but that legislative vehicle subsequently ran into problems. Rather than allow the AM radio legislation to remain stalled, Scalise said he decided to bring it directly to the House floor. The announcement drew an immediate response from the National Association of Broadcasters. NAB President and CEO Curtis LeGeyt said broadcasters applaud Scalise's decision to bring the bill forward for a standalone vote, calling it an important step for legislation that has earned overwhelming bipartisan support in Congress and across the country. The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act would require AM radio capability to remain available in new vehicles, even as automakers introduce newer entertainment and communications technologies. For Scalise, the public-safety argument is personal. The Louisiana Republican recalled his experience during Hurricane Katrina, when New Orleans and surrounding areas experienced widespread destruction and prolonged power outages. Vocus is dealing with a break on its Australia Singapore Cable (ASC) system that runs between Perth and Singapore, weeks after the second major cable on the route experienced a shunt fault. The problems with ASC began Friday week and were traced to a cable break between Anyer, which sits about 80km west of Jakarta, and Singapore, in Indonesian waters. Internet traffic has been rerouted via alternate paths, with network engineers on Reddit reporting traffic shifting to Australian east coast cables and then through Japan or the United States. SPREADING AS FAST AS COVID 19 - MESHTASTIC DEVICES. Radio Spectrum Management New Zealand has issued a reminder regarding LoRaWAN compliance with General User Radio Licence (GURL) conditions. LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) is a low-power wireless technology widely used by battery-powered sensors that transmit small amounts of data at low data rates. These characteristics enable high receiver sensitivity allowing for communications over considerable distances while using very low transmit power, making the technology well suited to frequency bands covered by the Short Range Devices (SRD) GURL. All LoRaWAN transmissions operating under a GURL must comply with the applicable GURL conditions for both data transmissions and device activation (join) transmissions. For devices using the European 868 MHz band plan, join requests typically occur on 868.1, 868.3 and 868.5 MHz. To comply with the New Zealand SRD GURL, transmissions on these specific frequencies must not exceed the permitted EIRP limit of 3 dBm (-27 dBW). Devices operating in the 915928 MHz band must also comply with the relevant SRD GURL requirements, including Special Condition 23. All conditions included in GURLs are prescribed to protect other licensed radio services from harmful interference. It is essential for the long-term sustainability of the radio spectrum that these conditions are complied with. Now I have to admit I never realised our editor, VK4BB, G or GRAHAM KEMP was that old! No this is George Kemp. The station is operated by the A.R.I. Fidenza Radio Club in Italy, under the patronage of the Marconi Foundation. It is part of their annual "Marconi Supporters" Award program. George Kemp became Marconi's trusted assistant and collaborator. A small asteroid, 2026 RW1, the size of a domestic washing machine, burned up over the Indian Ocean near the north-western coast of Australia. It was detected a few hours before entering the atmosphere. Such objects are far from always discovered in advance, as this case demonstrates clearly. Orbital calculations almost immediately showed that the body would enter Earths atmosphere later that same day. Richard Moissl, Head of ESAs Planetary Defence Office, reported that the predicted trajectory passed over the ocean, so there was no threat. According to NASA estimates, fragments about one meter across enter the atmosphere several dozen times per year. Hopefully, with the assistance of local radio amateurs, activators and improved mapping information, SOTA 3DA will be able to expand and refine the Eswatini summit database in the future. Ask a young radio operator from upstate New York. Congratulations to Maggie Flowers, KE2AIZ, who has been declared member number 10,000 in the Long Island CW Club. The 11-year-old New York amateur, who is a fifth generation ham, received her license at age 7 and quickly developed a fascination for CW, which she pursued. She has since become an avid CW contester and a mentor to other youngsters. She says on her page on QRZ.com: "CW is my first language." Her recognition, published in the LICW Club's most recent newsletter, comes after the club decided that conferring this milestone member number should represent the future. I've mentioned before that WICEN NSW is a specialist support squad of VRA Rescue NSW. Other VRA specialist squads are the Aerial Operations and the Search Dogs units. At last Sunday's monthly WICEN meetup, we "let the dogs out" for an activity of our own: a simulated land search at Galston, not far from the VK2WI site at Dural. A few volunteer domestic canines were fitted with Garmin Alpha TT-25 GPS dog tracking collars. Several members also carried GPS-enabled WICEN VHF DMR portables, Garmin InReach units, and two metre band APRS trackers. It was an opportunity to test the tracker technology as well as getting some live practice using SARTrack. Of particular note were the Garmin devices. Previously, it had not been possible to follow these in real time on SARTrack, but thanks to some software wizardry from James VK2FWHY, now we can. This will allow VRA Rescue's Search Dogs squad to be tracked when they are off-leash, searching more quickly, and improving situational awareness at base during searches. From the QRZ Labs the QRZ Real Time QSO Manager is an interactive live-spotting and logging web tool on QRZ that displays active ham radio operating sessions on a world map. Think of it as an interactive electronic spotting board where operators announce they are calling CQ or listening on a specific frequency. Active sessions appear as color-coded icons on a global map, sorted by amateur bands and operating modes. Clicking an icon shows operator details (call sign, grid square, frequency, mode, and comments) and lets you log a QSO directly into your QRZ Logbook. Icons are displayed at 100% brightness for fresh data and fade as time passes. Sessions automatically expire after 30 minutes unless updated or interacted with.
