Entrepreneur and Amateur Radio Operator Invests in the Next Generation of Problem Solvers The ARRL has announced an historic and transformational $1 million gift from Dr. James M. Galm, W8WTS. An entrepreneur and amateur radio operator who spent his career solving complex energy and engineering challenges, Dr. Galm is now investing in the next generation of problem solvers through his support of ARRL. The gift will directly support ARRL programs and activities, including the ARRL STEM education initiative within the Education and Technology Program, and ARRLs work defending access to amateur radio spectrum through the Spectrum Defence Fund. He didnt stop there, however. Dr. Galm expressed how important ARRL is to the future of amateur radio by designating a significant portion of his gift as unrestricted support to the ARRL Diamond Club, which supports ARRLs general fund, and the Second Century Fund, ARRLs unrestricted endowment fund, which will be invested and support ARRL operations in perpetuity. A caver has been rescued after being trapped vertically underground at the Rat's Nest Cave in Canada, in an operation that deployed volunteer-built underground radio technology for the first time. Rat's Nest Cave is a wild, naturally formed limestone cave located beneath Grotto Mountain Alberta. The rescue group says a cave radio that transmits signals through rock was used in a live operation for the first time. The technology was developed by members of Alberta/BC Cave Rescue, which is part of Search and Rescue Alberta, in response to the difficulty of using traditional communication methods like phones, radios or GPS underground. The rescue team now has a cave radio system using QDX-M technology, capable of communicating through more than 500 meters of solid rock, the release says. "Such units are not currently available commercially at an affordable cost, so the benefits of volunteer design and construction work by cavers with electrical engineering and amateur radio backgrounds has been considerable," it says. The RSGB Board is pleased to announce that, following its meeting on 22 August 2026, Graham Smith, G4NMD has been appointed Chair of the Board. This appointment forms part of a planned and orderly leadership transition agreed by the Board. Stewart Bryant, G3YSX, who has served as Chair since 2023 with distinction, fully supports the change and will remain a Director until the 2027 AGM. He will continue to contribute his considerable experience to the Society and its activities. Licensed since 1974, Graham has been active in many areas of amateur radio, including service as an RSGB District Representative, RAYNET-UK Controller and member of the Emergency Communications and Resilience Group. Since joining the Board, he has led work on resilience, volunteer development, and governance improvement, as well as serving as Board Liaison for Training and Education. What comes back is not a controller. It is a flat hiss that holds a second and clears. The next call does it again. Nothing is wrong with the radio. Nothing is wrong with the weather. The only new thing up there is a white dome screwed to the roof overhead, sold to passengers as fast internet. Within weeks an airline had to choose which one it would rather keep. Long before any of this, a person sat down with a drawing of the airplanes back. On that drawing are the things already living up there. A little fin for the radio. Another for navigation. Wiring, inspection panels, and the rivets holding it all to metal thinner than a coin. The job is to find room for one more thing. The trade calls that configuration and integration, and almost nobody outside it has heard of it. There is no beautiful equation in it, only drawings, spacing and long arguments about inches, and engineers who came up loving the elegant parts look down on it. Here a satellite antenna had to see the sky, so up it went. The radios fin wanted clean metal and a clear horizon, so it was already up there. On a long airplane there is room for the two to ignore each other. A regional jet has none. Its back is short and crowded, and they ended up close enough to hear each other breathe. Why a few inches were the whole argument The reports came from pilots, not from any monitoring system. The carrier switched it off across the whole group in early June. tinyurl.com/um33yt2h Oregon, USA, AM Radio Station Recovers After Tower Suffers Crop-Duster Strike. A crop-duster aircraft crashed into the primary broadcast tower for an AM radio station in Klamath Falls, last week. Basin Mediactives KLAD(AM) 960 is licensed to Klamath Falls and transmits from one tower in a four-tower array along the Lost River, about five miles southeast of Altamont. It runs 5 kW during the day BUT only 26 watts at night from the site. Yep Twenty Six. The station is in the process of coming back on the air using one other towers at the site. According to Basin Mediactives mybasin.com, Klamath County Sheriffs Office deputies and fire personnel were dispatched to the area of an aircraft crash. A single-engine, fixed-wing crop-duster aircraft, had been conducting an agricultural pesticide application flight when the aircraft struck the tower. The aircraft subsequently crashed to the ground and caught fire. A nearby witness pulled Macy (the Pilot) away from the wreckage before emergency responders arrived. Macy sustained major injuries and was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Centre for treatment. Listening for Signals in an Increasingly Noisy Radio Sky: The issue is significant enough to feature in preparations for the ITU World Radiocommunication Conference 2027 (WRC-27). Agenda items include protecting radio quiet zones and radio astronomy bands from aggregate interference produced by large non-geostationary satellite constellations, examining direct satellite-to-phone services, considering communications around the Moon and protecting radio astronomy above 76 GHz from unwanted emissions. These international spectrum discussions have obvious parallels for amateur radio: once the electromagnetic environment becomes sufficiently noisy, even the best receiver cannot recover a signal buried beneath interference. (eHam) Lightning, despite being a common and readily-detected phenomenon, is nevertheless difficult to study. One reason is the difficulty of predicting when and where lightning will strike; tall structures do attract more lightning strikes, but its hard to move them into a storms path. "In a statement that has been stirring global controversy, the POTA board has said that it has begun a review of thousands of French ZNIEFF-recognised parks which, according to board members, may not be qualified to continue under POTA's rules. The statement explained that the board is looking at the "legal and administrative authority behind the designation," which is the core argument behind the review. ZNIEFF, which stands for Zone Naturelle 'Intrt cologique, Faunistique et Floristique, is a national designation given to ecologically important sites featuring biodiversity. According to the statement, if a park loses its designation, activations that have already taken place will remain credited for both hunters and chasers. The POTA board said, however, it has no intention of continuing to maintain former status for any parks that do not meet POTA's eligibility. The statement said: [quote] "Historical operating credit can be preserved without requiring an ineligible reference to remain active indefinitely." [endquote] This is Jeremy Boot G4NJH. Still with news from POTA, "France is not being singled out", as some public statements have suggested. Although different nations have different government frameworks and manage their parks differently, other countries' parks could likewise come under the same scrutiny. The board said that [quote] "the challenge is making sure that growth occurs within a framework that can be applied fairly and sustainably around the world." WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - BALLOONS this is Grant VK5GR with some news from the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group based in Adelaide. Today, Sunday August 30th, we are launching another high-altitude balloon, which will be carrying an Amateur Radio repeater into the stratosphere. Horus Flight 73 will lift off from Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills at approximately 10am Australian Central Time with a flight path heading east from Adelaide. We are aiming to fly over 30km altitude, which should at the peak of the flight give the balloon roughly 700km range. The repeater payload is a cross-band system which will operate with an uplink of 145.075 MHz and a downlink of 438.975 MHz. To access the repeater, you will need a 91.5 Hz CTCSS tone. The repeater transmitter is only running a couple of watts and so at maximum range, a 6-10 element Yagi is recommended to help receive the balloon on 70cm. The repeater access will be coordinated through our club station VK5ARG which will run as net control. So, head on out and see how you go. We expect the coverage to likely reach at least Ballarat and potentially all the way into Melbourne depending on conditions. In addition to the voice repeater, the balloon will also be carrying several other payloads. One of the new experiments is a Meshcore repeater on 900 MHz LORA. The payload will operate using the "Australia (Narrow)" settings which should allow relaying of messages from the Victorian Meshcore network into South Australia. Details of the Meshcore experiment are on our website. Finally, we are also flying our Wenet live camera payload, which has a wideband digital downlink on 443.5 MHz as well as our usual FSK telemetry payloads on 434.2 and 434.21 MHz, so there are lots of ways for amateur operators to get involved with the project across South Australia and Western Victoria. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - FINAL FRONTIER AMSAT-VK Secretary - secretary@amsat-vk.org The Amateur Radio Society of Bangladesh hopes to add the voices of satellite enthusiasts around the globe to their own call for an amateur radio transponder aboard the nation's second satellite. While the Bangladesh Satellite-2 is still in the planning stages, the radio society has applied to the Bangladesh Satellite Company Limited for the dedicated amateur radio payload. A petition is currently being circulated, asking for others to stress the importance of getting it approved. The transponder could be used for ham radio communication, emergency and disaster communication and technical education and experimentation. The satellite is intended to be an Earth observation satellite and it would be the nation's second satellite to be launched. The radio society believes that a petition, adding the voices of the international ham radio community, would underscore the need for the transponder. FramSat-1.5 Orbit NTNU, Norway. The student organizations 1U CubeSat, which proposed a UHF downlink using 2FSK at 9k6 and an Isar Aerospace launch from Andoya in Q4 2026, was declined on August 17. The panel noted that the mission appears to be a technology demonstration for a commercial entity rather than an educational or amateur project. Galapagos-UTE University UTE, Ecuador. The satellite, which collects background radiation data and carries an ADS-B aircraft-monitoring module along with SSTV image transmission capability, was launched from Vostochny on December 28, 2025 but its coordination request was not filed until July 8, 2026. The request was declined on August 18, as coordination is not provided for requests received after launch. Something truly special is happening this November a DXpedition that is not only technically ambitious but also offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for young amateur radio operators to experience DXpeditioning at the highest level for the very first time. The VK9XY DXpedition, our third DXpedition in three years, will activate Christmas Island (IOTA OC-002) with a youth-led international team of eight young operators including hams from the United States, Lithuania, Hungary and Malawi led by Max Freedman (N4ML). Veteran DXpeditioners Gregg W6IZT and Glenn W0GJ join the team on-island purely as advisors and mentors; the planning and the on-air work belong to the young ops. Additionally, 3040 young hams worldwide will join remotely using the innovative NexGen RiB2 remote stations, made possible through an equipment grant from the Northern California DX Foundation. The dates of operation are November 16 to December 4, 2026 roughly eighteen days on the air from one of the Indian Ocean's rarest and most remote entities. With its focus on hands-on leadership, training, and knowledge transfer, this is more than a DXpedition it is an investment in the future of our hobby. The goal is to fully cover the travel and operational expenses of every one of our young team members so that financial circumstances are never a barrier to participation for these enthusiastic and dedicated young hams. The team will set up four local stations and two remote stations, plus a portable QO-100 satellite station, operating CW, SSB, FT8, and QO-100 satellite from more than one location on the island. On Saturday evening, 15 August, VRA Rescue NSW was activated to assist on Day 4 of the search for Lily Hooper, a hiker missing in Nattai National Park near Mittagong. Because WICEN NSW is a support squad of VRA Rescue, we received the call too. The request was not for radio operators this time, but instead to get extra boots on the ground to help locate Lily, and I was there for WICEN. My team's assigned search area was an hour's hike away from base, and several hours actually searching proved to be a physical challenge, with "Grade 5" rocky terrain, escarpments, ravines, and dense undergrowth making it difficult for the search teams combing the area. Unfortunately, as we now know from media reports, the search did not end well, and we send our sincere condolences to Lily's family and friends. Photos from the search are on the WICEN and VRA Rescue social media feeds. Meanwhile, WICEN's Training Officer, Ian VK2AMZ was on holiday on the island of Oahu recently, when he reported local infrastructure damage and power outages resulting from an earthquake that struck the neighbouring island of Hawaii. Our friends in PAREDN -- that's WICEN's counterpart in the Philippines -- were keen to test if their Winlink-to-SMS gateway could deliver text messages into the affected area. All they needed was the number of someone there with a mobile phone. Thanks to Ian, we were able to verify that Winlink radio messages got through on SMS to his mobile phone. Well done to the gateway developers and to PAREDN for making the service available. It may come in useful as Hawaii's hurricane season peaks in September.
