Following the recent magnitude 7.7 earthquake in eastern Indonesia, which has resulted in significant loss of life, injuries and the evacuation of thousands of people, the International Amateur Radio Union Region 3 Director Oscar Reyes VK3TX has issued an urgent request to amateur radio operators across the region. Amateur radio operators in affected areas are assisting with emergency and disaster-response communications following damage to buildings and disruption to normal communications infrastructure. IARU Region 3 is asking amateurs to keep two emergency frequencies clear: 7.110 MHz on the 40-metre band, which is being used for HF emergency communications, and 145.100 MHz on 2 metres, which is being used for local VHF coordination in affected areas. The request to amateur operators is straightforward: please avoid transmitting on these frequencies unless you are specifically requested to assist. Give absolute priority to emergency and disaster-response traffic, and monitor where possible. The IARU Region 3 Disaster Communication Committee, together with emergency communications coordinators and regional authorities, remains ready to assist should further amateur radio support be required. Australian amateurs are encouraged to exercise good operating discipline and help ensure that these emergency communications remain available to those who need them. Well that number IS in the paper! The 600-800 amateur radio hams in Canberra are chatting with people around the world and even bouncing signals off the moon and communicating with the International Space Station. Yep old-school amateur radio is thriving, and Canberra Region Amateur Radio Club has one of the highest memberships in Australia says Club vice president Carl Makin. Carl, 60, got his amateur radio licence when he was 18 and he now owns an 8.5-metre antennae to traverse the radio waves. He went on to say There are people out there bouncing signals off the moon and amateur satellites in orbit, including some radio gear on the International Space Station, a lot of astronauts have a ham radio license on the station and during their free time, some of them jump on and have a chat to people. Over a couple of hours, Carl can make 30 or 40 contacts across the world and so far, hes tallied about 80 countries. Its really easy to get your first 50 and then suddenly youre searching for things like an island in the middle of the Pacific that gets activated twice a year or stuff like that, he said. The proactive and sustained work by hams throughout the region have made a real difference, providing repeater access for the Fire Department after the collapse of their digital system. Hams were also restoring power to strategically located club repeaters 3,600 metres above sea level by installing solar panels and batteries. At one site, as work continued on repeaters used by amateurs and various institutions in the Coffee Axis region, the public cultural FM radio station, RAC, supplied generator power to support the effort. SOUTH AFRICA. According to a statement issued by SARL HAMNET Gauteng, operators from its self-described Interference Investigation Unit spent several weeks tracking, observing and gathering intelligence after amateur radio operators in the East Rand reported unlawful transmissions on amateur radio repeater frequencies. The organisation said an Icasa (akin to our ACMA) investigating officer led the operation. Following interviews and inspections at several companies in the identified area, investigators identified an entity providing services to a business on the premises. SARL HAMNET Gauteng alleges the entity was operating commercial radio equipment on the amateur radio spectrum between 430MHz and 440MHz without the required authorisation, causing interference to amateur radio repeaters across Gauteng. The response was enthusiastic, with more than 80 entries submitted in each contest from clubs across the country. The contests were designed not simply to identify the best-looking website or newsletter, but to recognize radio clubs that are using these tools effectively to serve their members. A trio of amateur radio operators in Columbus, Ohio, Dan Merrill, KE8KJX, Steve Robeano, WD8JKX, and John Ross, KD8IDJ, have been certified for Honour Flight Mission 156 on October 14, 2026. This is an not an ordinary group of Veterans. For over 60 years, they have travelled the same paths, had the same experiences, and acquired the same interests, and now they will complete Honour Flight together. Last year, they made history at the Columbus HamFest by just being at the same place together for the first time. All are ARRL members, all have Amateur Extra-class licenses, all are musicians and Masons, and they all served in the same army unit after active duty the 338th Army Band. In fact, this Honour Flight mission is unique. 19 members of the 338th Army Band and friends are going along, as well as 60 other Veterans from the central Ohio area. Honour Flight is a non-profit network in the United States that flies military veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit the war memorials built in their honour. These life-changing, all-expense-paid trips are 100% free for the veterans, funded entirely through private donations and community support. hamlife.jp reports that both Kenwood and Uniden have announced significant anniversary milestones to be celebrated at Ham Fair 2026 in Japan next weekend. Both companies are teasing new radio equipment intended to be showcased at the event on August 29th. Kenwood will celebrate 80 years in production with a special musical event at their booth. The recently announced TM-D750S and TM-D750 will also be on full display and available for attendees to interact with. Uniden is celebrating 60 years in production and is teasing what appears to be a new handheld transceiver to be revealed at Ham Fair. LICENSEE PETITIONS FCC TO ALLOW CONTACTS WITH UNLICENSED STATIONS FOR ANY REASON. This may be the "shot in the arm" of new younger people advancing into Amateur Radio. Welcome to the 21st century. The call has gone out to US hams "If you don't like it, let's hear your better idea... You should be able to comment to the FCC once a proposed rulemaking is in effect.. You have plenty of time to develop your comments.." The petition is certainly worth a read by all hams globally. The quagmire of 902-928 Mhz. 33cm Amateur Band activity has exploded these past couple of years due to unlicensed MeshTastic, LORA (LOng RAnge) experimentation. (ans) MARMOTSat, the satellite launched last month aboard a SpaceX rideshare mission, has received Canada's first official OSCAR designation. This comes at an important time as Canada gains a higher profile in the world of satellites. It is now known as Canada OSCAR 128. OSCAR is an acronym for Orbiting Satellite Carrying Amateur Radio. Its mission is to study the ionosphere to gain deeper knowledge of how people's actions affect climate change. The OSCAR designation is a significant one. It comes as AMSAT Canada takes its place as an AMSAT affiliate and begins inviting members to help grow the organisation. AMSAT Canada was incorporated as a non-profit in late 2023 and is the 28th affiliate of the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation. This recognition is a tribute, not a competition, says the Challenger Centre. It honours those who embody the Challenger crews values of exploration, learning, and inspiration, while also celebrating trailblazing organizations and programs that will carry this mission forward into the future. Nominations from non-profit STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) programs that have a national-level impact on STEM learning and other STEM advocates were submitted by members of the broader Challenger Centre community, with honourees selected by an appointed committee. Well, here's a recent update on some instruments that were installed nearly half a century ago and the new upload wasn't simple. The update had to travel 13 billion miles through deep space. When it reached its destination at NASA's Voyager 2, it went to work, deactivating some of the probe's higher-powered scientific instruments and substituting methods that consume less power. NASA said in a statement that conserving power means Voyager 2's instruments can continue operating for another year, if not longer. The probe has been on the job since its launch in 1977. NASA estimates that Voyager 2 and its twin, Voyager 1, now have about two-thirds of their original reserves of power which is drawn from radioisotope thermoelectric generators. The software update mission, which NASA calls "Big Bang," isn't quite over yet. Voyager 1 is up next, and it's even farther away from Earth. In fact, in November it will have travelled the distance of one light-day. That means the update will need to travel 26 billion kilometres, and hopefully won't need on-site tech support. QRZ is pleased to announce that the Real Time QSO Map (RTQM) released to initial beta testing in late 2025 is back with new features and ready for another round of beta testing. You may recall that the Real-Time QSO Manager is similar to a spotting network, except that it's not based on random reports and observations but rather real-time user input. It's a way to call CQ silently, as well as a way to know exactly when stations are standing by. YOU put yourself on the world map indicating your mode and frequency, and then just wait for someone to call! You don't have to call CQ at all, because you've effectively done that through RTQM. With RTQM, users can see who's available on all bands and all modes simultaneously. Peter worked tirelessly for the RSGB, IARU and for all radio amateurs through his spectrum, technical and regulatory work.
