"Dozens of entries were received, but only three could win," said QST Editor Steve Ford, WB8IMY. The first-prize winner of the 2018 QST Antenna Design Competition was a 160/80-meter loop antenna design by a VKer. Requirements for the 2018 QST Antenna Design Competition included an antenna for one or more bands between 2200 meters and 10 meters that could fit within a 30 × 50 foot area and be no taller than 30 feet above ground at any point. "In other words, we were seeking designs for LF, MF, or HF antennas for limited-space applications," Ford explained. "We wanted to see innovative antennas that would allow amateurs to get on the air without the need for towering supports and acres of property. Our winners not only met this challenge, they exceeded it." For background information take a look at Steve's website. http://members.iinet.net.au/~sadler@netspace.net.au/tmla.html WIA Board Comment for 16 December 2018 Seasons Greetings from WIA Director Justin VK7TW The WIA Education Team has been working initially with the Nominated Assessors and will then be working with Assessors and Learning Facilitators on the changes in the event the WIA is the successful bidder for ACMA’s Approach to Market for Assessment and Callsign services. We have been made aware of at least 2 other tender submissions so competition is tight and the WIA is eagerly awaiting the outcome. The WIA Board has also been finalising the transitional arrangements with the ACMA in the event the WIA is not successful. The WIA is looking for a person to represent Australian and regional amateur interests at the APG19-4 meeting in Busan, Korea January 2019 They will be involved in WRC-19 Agenda Item 1.1 (50 MHz) and also takes part in many discussions at the APG meetings, in particular 9.1.6 (Wireless Power Transfer). It is important that amateurs continue to be represented at APG meetings as part of national delegations, IARU-R3 usually sends a number of delegates as well. The Australian Government highly value industry expertise at international and regional radiocommunications meetings. So, if you believe you have the requisite skills and knowledge and would like to represent amateur radio at Australian and Regional levels please let us know ASAP by emailing support@wia.org.au The Board recently took delivery of a new and prestigious WIA award that has been a few years in the making. I am proud to announce the Michael J. Owen Distinction Medal. I have chosen some of the highlight of Michael’s achievements and a more detailed chronology can be found at the WIA web site on the Awards page. Michael was influential in shaping the hobby of Amateur Radio and then progressing through the ranks of administration both in Australia and overseas. Michael was responsible for significant reform of the WIA, was well known across the ACMA and had worked closely with many staff on a range of issues. Michael’s legal drafting skills were second to none, and his ability to clearly articulate his position on a number of issues was of immeasurable value to the hobby. The IARU is indebted to his work at the World Radio Conferences and many regional Asia Pacific Telecommunity meetings. In WRC2003 he was responsible for Article 25, that included the abolition of mandatory Morse code, a freeing up of amateur radio involvement in emergency communications and third party traffic. The medal reads for “Services to the amateur radio community and the WIA” Pictures of the medals can be seen on the WIA Website – Awards Page. JAPAN HAVING A HOLIDAY QSO WITH 'SERGIO & SERGEI' IN JAPAN Continuing its trip around the globe, a popular film about amateur radio during the Cold War Era is about to be released in theaters in two more countries. Mike Askins KE5CXP asked his listener to Amateur Radio Newsline who doesn’t love a holiday movie? “Miracle on 34th Street.” “Polar Express." “It’s a Wonderful Life.” Only a Grinch among amateur radio operators would dare challenge the latest one to be released into theaters on Saturday, Dec. 1st. “Sergio & Sergei,” which debuted in the U.S. earlier this year, has finally made its way to the screen in Japan, and is set to show up in theaters. Set in the Cold War Era, just as the Soviet Union is in the throes of collapse, the film tells the story of the friendship between an amateur radio operator in Cuba and the cosmonaut Sergei, circling the earth in limbo aboard the Mir space station as political dismantling of the USSR gets under way below. The 93-minute film was an award-winner at the recent Havana Film Festival in New York, for best script. Now the creative team is hoping the dialogue in its Morse Code and SSB sequences get a good signal report from movie-going hams and non-hams – in any language. CHINA China's mission to the darkside of the Moon China is going where no one has gone before--the dark or farside of the Moon. Friday last week, a Long March 3B rocket blasted off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre, propelling a lander and rover toward hidden craters possibly containing water and other resources key to future human exploration. If the mission succeeds, it will catapult China into the forefront of lunar exploration with a landing that no other nation has even dared attempt. SOUTH AFRICA THE 2019 SARL DAY OF THE RADIO AMATEUR The Boland Amateur Radio Club will be hosting the 2019 SARL Day of the Radio Amateur at two venues in Stellenbosch on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 April 2019. SARL Hamnet is planning a meeting for Friday morning and the SARL Symposium will be run on Friday afternoon and into the early evening. The SARL AGM will be held on Saturday morning. These events will take place at the Datavoice House Auditorium in the Techno Park at Stellenbosch. The SARL Awards Dinner will be held at the Stellenbosch Golf Club on Saturday evening. USA ‘Suspicious package’ at post office was ham radio equipment The Gainesville Sun reports the U.S. Post Office on Southwest 34th Street was briefly evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious package The newspaper says: A suspicious package found Thursday at U.S. Post Office on Southwest 34th Street was deemed non-threatening by law enforcement. An email sent by Gainesville Police Department spokesman Capt. Jorge Campos said several officers responded to a call from the post office about a large package with pipes and wire coming from it. Campos wrote that the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was called out and the building was evacuated. It was eventually determined to be ham radio parts protruding through the box. Employees were able to return to work. (Southgate) ---------------------------------------------------------------------* WORLD WIDE SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP NEWS BALLOONING Students' ham radio balloon attempts round the world flight On Dec 8 Jefferson (USA) Intermediate School’s 5th grade science classes assisted in the launch of an amateur radio 144.390 MHz FM APRS balloon in an attempt to fly around the world KRLS News reported that these students partnered with local experts from the Pella Amateur Radio Club to fly a “pico-satellite” called a SkyTracker, which contains GPS and amateur radio technology and permits the students to track the path of the balloon flight, anywhere on Earth. The balloon was designed to lift the SkyTracker to about 30,000 feet and then stop. The balloon has since then caught the jet stream, which should carry it around the globe. In the 48 hours after launch, more than 110 amateur radio operators around the world had successfully received and submitted telemetry from the satellite. Following in the long tradition of naming amateur satellites, AMSAT hereby designates Fox-1Cliff as AMSAT-OSCAR 95 (AO-95). Now comes word 'Fox-1Cliff we have a problem. I am pleased to announce Amateur Radio will be showcased operating under the special event call sign VI25AJ. A showcase station has been planned demonstrating many aspects of our exciting hobby and an ARDF course will be running. We are expecting 2000 scouts to participate in the Amateur Radio activity over the duration of the Jamboree. Get on the air and give us a call. Submitting news items A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't plug commercial traders "on air", but we at the WIA will put your supporters in this text edition "no worries." If you would like to submit news items for inclusion in the VK1WIA broadcasts, please email your item in text to nationalnews@wia.org.au and don't JUST send url's links, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution. To submit audio read "how to submit items" in the weekly news page on http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/contribute/ We would appreciate items no longer than 2 minutes in length as we only have a half hour. Remember the sooner you submit material the more the likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of WIA National News.
