Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop 'We did not support the ABC closing its shortwave in the Pacific' Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has told Radio National's Fran Kelly that her party did not support the ABC's decision to switch off short wave services in the Pacific. "It is not a decision of the Australian government," she said. Bishop had travelled to Samoa to launch a radio transmission facility, funded by Australia's aid program, to support disaster management and emergency management. "We have a media assistance scheme to ensure that radio transmission can continue... I would certainly encourage the ABC to continue shortwave transmission in the Pacific." Bishop said. This is the first time 3GPP will have provided a briefing of this type in Australia, and it therefore presents a unique opportunity to hear directly from 3GPP leadership about the current status and strategic directions, including future 5G plans. As WO-N (Warrant Officer of the Navy), Garry is responsible to the Chief of Navy (CN), and as the most senior ranking sailor in the Navy is entitled to exercise command over all other Sailors in the RAN. Now comes word that in the USA, US Navy Vice Admiral Charles A. Richard, W 4 HFZ, assumed command of US submarine forces during a change-of-command ceremony on August 4, held aboard the submarine USS Washington. An ARRL Life Member, W4HFZ, 58, is well-known in the AMSAT and APRS communities. He had been serving as the deputy commander of US Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. A radio amateur since 1974, Richard said on his qrz.com profile that he enjoys digital satellite operations. INDONESIAN EMERGENCY RESPONSE EXTENDED Entering yet another week of post-Earthquake 7 SR which shook the region in West Nusa Tenggara and Bali, emergency handling was still intensive. The emergency response period for handling the impact of earthquakes in West Nusa Tenggara ended on 08/08/2018. However, considering the many problems in handling the impact of the earthquake, the Governor of West Nusa Tenggara finally decided to extend the 14-day emergency response period, which is calculated from August 12 to 25. Conditions in the field are still plagued by many problems, such as the victims who have to be evacuated, refugees who have not been handled properly, the aftershocks that are still going on and even earthquakes that damage and cause casualties. With the establishment of an emergency response period there is easy access for personnel deployment, resource budget use, procurement of logistics and equipment, and administration so that the handling of disaster impacts becomes faster. The number of earthquake victims continues to increase. Until Saturday last week it was recorded that 387 people had perished. She was unable to recall anything initially, not even her name. (rsgb) MEDIA WATCH All India Radio shortwave external service in doubt The Hindustan Times reports there are questions over future of All India Radio (AIR) shortwave external service The external services division of All India Radio is caught in a turf war between the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), which runs it and the ministry of external affairs (MEA), which is expected to fund it. While the MIB wants the service to continue and even expand; MEA has been suggesting shutting down the programmes, pointing out that the service offered through short wave transmission has outlived its utility and does not attract listeners abroad, said an MIB official aware of the developments. According to this MIB official, the service, which was started soon after the outbreak of World War II has emerged as a bone of contention between the two ministries, as the cost of running the shows is high and the MEA has been unwilling to pick the tab. It's an amateur radio paging network that will be linked across the internet and capable of sending messages via transmitters and hotspots around the country. The Decentralised Amateur Paging Network, as it will be known, will make use of two frequencies - 432.625 MHz and 144.625 MHz. The system is based on a German application known as DAPNET. Participants must be licensed amateur radio operators. The network of pager transmitters is designed to send messages that can be addressed directly to an amateur operator’s call sign or transmit emergency and weather information based on regions. The system makes use of the standard asynchronous paging protocol known as POCSAG, or, Post Office Code Standardisation Advisory Group. The local SCARS club sent five OMs to work as volunteers at the event, which ran from August 2nd to 5th. There was a forum on digital modes led by Ria Jairam N2RJ, rovering by Andrea Slack K2EZ and NASA research scientist Nancy Hall KC4IYH delivered the keynote speech at the convention banquet. According to one member of the three-person organizing committee, Michelle Carey W5MQC, the prize table was chock full of goodies from convention sponsors and Saturday also featured sessions offering help on DMR, antennas, CW, logging, programming rigs and just about anything else. Young radio amateurs from 23 countries arrived and were eager to get started. Anton, ZR 6 AIC presented a journey into Software Defined Radio. The delegates were presented with a VHF/UHF dongle donated by the South African Amateur Radio Development Trust and the associated cables sponsored by individual donors and AMSAT-SA. Anton explained the workings of SDR and after the youngsters had downloaded the software from the AMSAT SA website, it was soon that radio signals were received. After the mid-morning break, it was antenna building time with Guy ZS 6 GUY. They each built a two metre, 70 cm crossed Yagi. YOTA groups then divided into teams to build five BACARS's (Balloon Carrying Amateur Radio) - launching and tracking (using their just made yagis) of a high altitude balloon with various radio equipment on-board to explore near-space. Just because a MAN, Signor Guglielmo Marconi by name, invented commercial wireless telegraphy does not mean for a moment that the fair sex cannot master its mysteries. To prove that the girls and women of the country are rapidly awakening to the fact that radio operating is a worth-while accomplishment, both vocationally and intellectually, as reported in a magazine from early last century, The Electrical Experimenter, many YL’s were employed as RO’s (Radio Officers) at Department stores! Department stores? Why? Well this was an era when retail sales were dominated by large downtown department stores, which offered a wide variety of consumer goods. Some stores even had auditoriums, for providing entertainment, so it was natural for them to expand into radio broadcasting for publicity purposes. The Leo J. Meyberg Co.'s store in Los Angeles, California was known as Hamburger's, and it began radio broadcasting activities under an experimental licence, 6 XAK. Mrs. Alexander MacKenzie, of the New York State Woman's Suffrage party, 'Yonkers,' is the woman who provided material for a very good wireless story several years prior to 1916. During the summer of 1915 she went to the wireless instruments every day at stated hours, morning, noon and night, and flashed out the words-- "Votes for women" 400 miles into the ether. Usually she got replies, sometimes from land wireless stations and sometimes from ships at sea, ranging from "Good for you old lady!" and "We're with you!" to "Oh, piffle!" The Yonkers women used wireless in their 24-hour demonstration, election night, they made speeches in Manor House Square and a wireless station above the platform received messages from various celebrities and prominent suffragists. Women operators were usually in high demand as Ships RO’s, which brings to mind, among other facts, that of a progressive Boston young lady, who, being a radio operator, found she could not gain a position on a certain ship as two operators were required and one of them was a man! What did she do? Very simple--she married him! Remember the sooner you submit material the more the likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of WIA National News.
