IN OUR 22nd YEAR OF NON STOP NEWS WIA AGM CONFERENCE IS NEXT WEEKEND - THE WHAT, WHERE, WHEN and WHY. THIS STORY AND MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA 2017 AND FOR WEEK OF MAY 14 Board Talk The Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) annual general meeting weekend in Hahndorf is so well attended it has resulted in one event changing to a larger venue. Due to the strong bookings received, THERE IS NO ROOM AT THE HAUS. The May 19 Friday night Gourmet Pizza meal has been moved to an even bigger venue – the Adelaide Hills Convention Centre. This change will be on the official weekend program hand-out as well as the WIA website. Just repeating, the Friday night Gourmet Pizza meal will now be at Adelaide Hills Convention Centre. Bookings for the weekend are now closed with 259 people in total registered for some aspect of the weekend. For the Friday night Gourmet Pizza dinner there were 170 people, the Saturday annual general meeting and Open Forum 157, the Saturday afternoon technical sessions 177 with 41 booked for the partners tour. On Saturday night the WIA annual dinner has 200, the motor museum tour 85 and for the Sunday BBQ at the Hahndorf footy club 169. Also on Sunday there will be numerous free displays having interest for many attending the weekend and day trippers arriving too for those events and activities. The WIA has also decided not to stream this year’s AGM and Open Forum proceedings. This was a difficult decision following the success of streaming at last year's AGM on Norfolk Island. However in the current heated climate the Board elected to be very cautious about a media channel that offered no ability to vet its content prior to transmitting. It was a unanimous Board decision. The proceedings will be recorded for distribution on a later day. WIA BOARD TALK This is Grant VK5GR, with some more news about the activities planned next week here in Hahndorf for the WIA AGM & Convention 2017! Final preparations are in full swing ready to receive all of our visitors here in VK5. The weekend will be jam packed with lots of amateur radio related events for you to take part in. The curtain goes up on Friday afternoon at 3.00pm with the running of the Australian Contesting Technical College, presented by Trent VK4TS with thanks to the Amateur Radio Experimenters Group. Details of this can be found on the AREG Website (www.areg.org.au). Next, we have the welcome dinner at Adelaide Hills Convention Centre in Hahndorf on Friday evening. This is a great opportunity to meet the other delegates and complete your registration for the weekend's activities. The main event starts Saturday, with the AGM commencing at the Hahndorf Convention Centre at 9.00am, followed by the open forum. At 12:30pm, we have the first of our technical sessions with Doc VK5BUG talking about MF and LF bands and equipment. After lunch, the main Amateur Radio showcase starts, with a host of guest speakers coming to talk to you about many aspects of amateur radio covering from microwaves to HF and everything in between! Saturday evening's dinner starts at 6.30 for a 7.00pm seating, where our Keynote speaker Craig VK5CE will talk about his many IOTA exploits, along with a couple of other small guest segments. The fun then continues on Sunday. Some of you will be visiting the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, while others will get the opportunity to come and try portable operation in one of the many conservation parks in the Adelaide Hills. In the afternoon, we will have our come and try radio day, being held at Hahndorf Football Club Oval. This event will showcase all of the topics that were introduced on Saturday plus many many more. You will be able to come and see live EME operation on 10GHz, which starts from 12:30pm, microwave operating demonstrations across the oval, live ATV demonstrations, HF magnetic loop antennas, digital modes, ARDF, WICEN, 630m MF operating demos and much much more. The Project Horus group from AREG will be launching a balloon at ~2pm and that will kick off balloon tracking demonstrations as well as providing an opportunity to again work through the cross band balloon repeater on 145.775MHz Uplink and 438.850MHz Downlink with VI5WOW on air through that repeater. If you have ever been curious about a new aspect of the hobby, chances are you will find someone to talk to about it at our Come and try Radio day! Finally on Sunday night, the event closing BBQ will be held at Hahndorf Oval for everyone who has registered starting from 6.00pm. Across the weekend, there will be regular nets and information sessions held on 2m as well. Listen to the VK5RAD 2m repeater on 147.000MHz for these events. Organisers should be listening to the repeater most of the time as well so if you need a hand, give a shout for VK5WOW! The event program has also been posted on the convention Facebook pages now ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/wiaagm.2017/files/ ) so you can download it and find out information about the event prior to arriving in Adelaide. Speaking of the Special Event Station, the levels of activity will ramp up a notch this week too with the addition of VI5WOW to the roster. To date we have made over 1000 contacts, and we expect to push this even further in the lead up to the event. Note too that contacts with VI5WOW in addition to VK5WOW count for extra credit, qualifying you for the gold award in addition to the other award requirements. Full details of the award are on the WIA website ( http://www.wia.org.au/members/wiaawards/agm2017/ ) Finally, a special announcement about VI5WOW. We have been able to add a unique activation of the callsign to the event roster. Andrew VK5CV will run VI5WOW on 630m mostly in the evenings and overnight from the 14th until the 21st of May. Activity will mostly be using the WSPR mode on 474.2kHz dial and a little on OPERA on 477kHz dial at the end of the week. He will also consider some digital QSOs on JT64 and JT9 if conditions are good and he is available. Just for fun Andrew may also try THOR 4 and THOR micro just below the WSPR band if conditions are good. Look out on the VK 630m Yahoo group for updates and times. Well that’s all from me this week. We really hope that everyone coming finds something positive in the program to take away and we are all looking forward to seeing all of you here in the Adelaide Hills next weekend! 73, this has been Grant VK5GR - for the WIA AGM VK5 Organising Committee AROUND VK BUDGET FOR SCIENCE Science in the Budget 2017-18: Marcus Strom writing in the Sydney Morning Herald tells how Australian astronomers will gain access to the world's best optical observatories in Chile thanks to a 10-year strategic partnership between Australia and the European Southern Observatory. The partnership is possible because of a $26.1 million allocation in Tuesday's federal budget. Bendigo Amateur Radio and Electronics Club have invited the public to 'Amateur Radio in the Cloud'. Amateur Radio has always been at the forefront of communications technologies, and these days it includes digital radio, Internet, Wi-Fi and networking. BAREC members will take visitors through how the internet and networking actually works, including addressing, troubleshooting digital connections, security issues, and how to determine where a problem lies when something does not work. Also discussed will be the various ways of connecting to the Internet. DMR via the BrandMeister network will be demonstrated, as well as cross-mode DMR/C4FM operation. Also demonstrated will be how you can listen to DMR activity on a computer, tablet or smartphone with an internet connection. Digital radio communications can offer a number of advantages, and provides worldwide communications without the need for large antennas and equipment. The evening commences at 7.30 pm, Friday May 19th at the BAREC club room, 20 Longlea Lane, Longlea. A gold coin donation would be appreciated. Tea, coffee and biscuits available. Radio Hams at National Association of Broadcasters Show The Las-Vegas Review-Journal reports on radio amateurs who attended the National Association of Broadcasters Show in the city More than 103,000 broadcasting industry professionals from around the world made their way to Las Vegas last week to take part in the National Association of Broadcasters annual convention. Several thousand of these attendees were hams. A large number of those hams stopped by the ARRL booth, including Ajaya Gupta VU2DED of Mumbai, India who presented a statuette of the State Emblem of India, which was adopted when India became a republic in 1950. The statuette was displayed in the booth for the duration of the convention. Other countries represented by visitors to the booth included Germany, Italy, South Korea, Brazil, the Netherlands, Australia, and New Zealand. Then as the third day of the National Association of Broadcasters Show came to an end, a few hundred people made their way past the booths showing off the broadcasting technology of the future — virtual reality, live streaming, Next Gen TV and connected car. They made their way from the Las Vegas Convention Centre to Ballroom B at the Westgate Las Vegas to relish in what many would consider the broadcast technology of a long gone era. About three hundred in all — mainly older than 50 with titles like sound engineer, senior engineer, chief technology officer, Network Vice President, the brains behind the new technology on the NAB Show floor — gathered in this room to take part in the Amateur Radio Operators Reception and share their deep passion for communicating with people via radio waves. Changes for Taiwan's amateurs According to an article in Taipei Times, the National Communications Commission in Taiwan has proposed several changes to the amateur radio rules in Taiwan. The changes include abolishing the amateur radio Morse code requirement and permitting operation on 432-440MHz on a secondary basis. Although the NCC has approved the amendments, it must put them on public notice for two months and then make any changes it considers necessary, before they take effect. Indian Telecommunications ministry tries to stop online transceiver sales The Mumbai Mirror reports a complaint by radio amateurs has resulted in the union Telecommunications ministry ordering websites to stop selling wireless transmitting equipment online with immediate effect The newspaper says: Online e-commerce sites can pose a serious national security threat. In November 2016, a group of 78 ham operators had written to the Wireless Advisor in the Telecommunications ministry warning them about a national security threat posed by unidentified wireless transmissions being heard on the VHF frequencies used by the ham operators. The unrestricted sales of open band, VHF, UHF two way radios, wireless sets, walkie-talkies and base mobile stations fall into this net. Taking cognizance of the letter, the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing of the Telecommunications ministry issued orders on Wednesday, April 26 to e-commerce sites including Amazon and EBay in India among others to stop selling these equipment’s immediately. Such sales are in violation of the rules Indian Wireless Telegraphy (Possession) Act, 1965, which mandate that any person using wireless telegraphy equipment needs to acquire a licence and those selling such equipment need to acquire a Dealers Possession Licence. " It is looking like there will be a lot of Shire activations this year in the VK Shires so be ready to nab the rare ones. Contest Tip Number 2; Log what you hear - the contest log checkers can cater for errors by senders e.g. giving out the wrong codes in the VK Shires but we cannot credit you if you copy different to what was sent to you. VKCL can be forced to log a Shire not in the list - so rather than waste time, log it and go forwards. We the Committee cater for it in the cross checking software. Always broadcast your callsign every QSO this also limits errors. Of NOTE For portable stations the normal format for a logger is Prefix Callsign e.g. VK5/VK4XX - logging VK4XX/P5 puts the callsign in North Korea and not South Australia VK5. WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RESCUE RADIO IARU REGION 3 Emergency Centre of Activity (CoA) frequencies 3.600, 7.110, 14.300, 18.160 and 21.360 MHz Hams in West Bengal responded to a dramatic rescue effort on a riverfront outside Kolkata, India after an aging wooden jetty in disrepair collapsed, sending at least four people to their death and injuring more than a dozen. The jetty was crowded with more than 150 commuters, including school children, at the time of its collapse in the Hooghly River about 22 miles north of Kolkata on April 26. The commuters were waiting for boats to ferry them to jetties on the opposite bank. As local fishermen took their boats out into the water to pull victims from the water, and others dived in, members of the West Bengal Radio Club arrived on the scene with their 2-meter handheld transceivers and using EchoLink, contacted the club station VU2MQT 15 kilometres away to assist in the rescue effort. Rinku Nag Biswas VU2JFB was at the club station and able to relay information. The EchoLink station utilized the KM6EOM repeater of the Wanderers Amateur Radio Club in Los Angeles, California after contacting its custodian Greg KI6GIG. (Amateur Radio Newsline's Jeremy Boot G4NJH) FINAL FINAL Renewing Amateur Radio Licences - A Reminder It can happen to anybody – you forget to renew your licence and it lapses. When you ask the ACMA, they tell you that a WIA callsign recommendation is needed after which you make a new licence application. Although the ACMA sends licence renewal notices, that’s not an obligation under the Radiocommunications Act. The ACMA sends the notice as a courtesy but if the renewal notice doesn’t arrive for some reason, it’s still your responsibility to renew on time. In fact, it’s always the licensee’s responsibility to ensure that a licence is current. So check: Do you know your licence expiry date, and are your address details correct? What about your callsign? Well, your callsign needs to be protected too if you’re attached to it. Your callsign indicates that you hold a valid licence, but if your licence lapses and is not renewed, your callsign is released and will be put on the WIA Public List 60 days after the lapse date. After 7 days the WIA will issue a Callsign Recommendation to whoever wants it - with ballot provisions applying to 2-letter callsign in some states. So the message is: if you don’t want to fight to get your call back, keep your licence current. Full information of the process and forms needed can be read at ‘All about Callsigns’ and ‘New licence or expired licence, or reclaiming a former callsign’ - on the WIA website at www.wia.org.au SOCIAL SCENE 2017 May 13 VK3 Moorabbin & District Radio Club HamFest 10am at the Southern Community Centre Mulgrave.
