In fact SWLing.com say based in the sleepy little town of Innisfail in North Queensland a NEW SHORTWAVE SERVICE IS BEING DEVELOPED: In May 2017 Radio 4KZ Innisfail is said to commence transmission on 5055 kHz between 4pm and about 9am seven days a week running 1.5kw into an inverted V antenna and will be a full simulcast of commercial outlet 4KZ AM/FM It expected that the service will provide satisfactory coverage to remote areas of the Cape where there are no AM or FM services available. In an announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange, TPG said it will use the spectrum to build a mobile network in Australia with 80% population coverage. All up, the network will cost approximately $1.9 billion, comprising the $1.26 billion paid for the spectrum plus $600 million for network rollout capital expenditure over a three-year period. AROUND VK Tuning in the sky with the Square Kilometre Array'. Bendigo Amateur Radio and Electronics Club invites the public to 'Tuning in the sky with the Square Kilometre Array', a presentation by Mike Lyons, VK3XFX. While we have been hearing about the Square Kilometre Array for over a decade now, it still remains a daunting technical challenge to build and operate a radio telescope of such scale. The SKA is head quartered at the famous Jodrell Bank radio observatory in the UK, and the actual receivers will be constructed in remote regions of Western Australia and Karoo in South Africa. This truly international effort will produce unprecedented views of the sky and probe the very beginnings of our Universe. While the planned size is enormous, the actual components are surprisingly simple. This talk will explore the inner workings of one of the SKA demonstrator telescopes, how its simple construction produces a vast amount of data, and how this will yield possible discoveries that we haven't yet imagined! WIA BOARD TALK AX prefix for ANZAC Day The ACMA automatically allows all radio amateurs to substitute their normal VK callsign prefix with the letters AX, on ANZAC Day, April 25. The AX prefix is popular among prefix hunters and others, with the use of a special QSL card encouraged by the Wireless Institute of Australia. Also the WIA office at Bayswater will be closed Tuesday April 25 for the commemorative day. The WIA Deed with the ACMA The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) in January 2009 delegated to the WIA certain statutory functions under the Radiocommunications Act. The delegations were to issue amateur certificates of proficiency, provide amateur examinations, and the management of callsigns. The WIA has extensive reporting obligations and must charge for the delegated services under the Commonwealth’s cost recovery guidelines. The initial term of the “Deed” was five years with an option for a further five years, that was exercised in 2014. The WIA Directors have indicated to the ACMA their willingness to renew the Deed, which expires in 2019, under similar commercial terms. WIA AGM This is Grant VK5GR, with some more news about the WIA AGM & Convention coming up in Hahndorf, South Australia on the 19th to the 21st of May. Based on the theme of advancing amateur radio, the radio clubs of South Australia have brought together a program showcasing the magic of Radio, and in the case of today's guest, Television as well! "Hello, my name is David VK5DMC, and I am here today to talk to you about Digital Amateur Television. Here in Port Pirie, we have had digital amateur television for about 3 or 4 years. A lot of people have contributed to the project. In the first instance when we kicked off with the project I asked the question "would anybody be interested in digital ATV." Some of the responses were "What would you do that for" while others were "yeah sure be happy to help" and happy to help a lot of people were" David, through his presentation will then explain the work that went into creating the VK5RDC ATV repeater through the TRAX FM Radio and Electronics club in the district, as well as talk about what do you need to do yourselves to get involved in this fascinating aspect of the hobby! In other news, the VK5WOW special event call sign has already been on air, creating quite a stir on 80 and 160m thanks to Steve VK5SFA who has been operating his loop antenna using the call sign. Shortly, other activations will take place in various VK5 conservation parks thanks to Paul VK5PAS and others, while yours truly, Grant VK5GR, has been running the call sign of an evening on various digital modes across the HF spectrum. Activity with the call will continue to build as the event draws closer, culminating in an attempted 10GHz EME contact as VI5WOW portable from Hahndorf Oval as part of the come and try amateur radio event on Sunday May 22nd. This Sunday event is open to everyone and will run officially from 1-5pm. Currently up to 9 different amateur radio activities are planned to be on display with either demonstrations or live activations! Everything from 122GHz to 1.8MHz will have someone there representing it, and activities on display will cover even more than the talks planned for the Saturday showcase. Recently I spoke about the noise that can upset understanding of the message that we are communicating, when the receiver gets part of the message or it is distorted because of the noise which accompanies the transmission. As radio amateurs, we can appreciate the analogy which is used in explaining person to person communication in the classroom. Of course there are many other reasons that clear communication fails in getting the message across. One that you may have heard of is called “confirmation bias”. We all have the tendency to identify with some-one whose generally perceived view of the world is the same as our own. That’s part of human nature and it is used in building a sense of belonging or a sense of common purpose. However, when information has to be analysed and put to good use, it is this very way of thinking that has to be put aside. We have to try and be the rational, honest person that we want to believe others should be. Here is the rub that unconsciously we can believe that what we are told is the right thing just because it agrees with our own personal opinion. There are times in life that we have to try and become the honest and rational person in making the right choice for our self, our family or a body we belong to. Confirmation bias can stifle the growth of a club or organisation by attracting a group or a clique that become dominant and cut the other members out of the action. It is something that we have to guard against to do the best for everyone. It can be lonely sticking to your guns by yourself but doing it for the right reason is what we call integrity. World Amateur Radio Day Every April 18, radio amateurs worldwide take to the airwaves in celebration of World Amateur Radio Day. It was on that day in 1925 that the International Amateur Radio Union or IARU was formed in Paris by pioneers to support Amateur Radio worldwide. Just two years later, at the International Radiotelegraph Conference, Amateur Radio gained the harmonically related allocations of the 160m, 80m, 40m, 20m, and 10m bands. Today there is well over 3-million radio amateurs worldwide. "Hello, This is Jason VK3FNQS. April 18 is the day for all of Amateur Radio to celebrate and tell the world about the science we can help teach, the community service we can provide and the fun we have. Speaking of the IARU, the IARU are keeping a watchful eye on what looks like a looming spectrum crisis. Pressure on the spectrum is mounting with the Internet of Things set to be greatly expanded giving regulators a worry how to manage the national resource. Already most Wi-Fi use is the band at 2.4 GHz with 5 GHz being opened up for the Australian invention that is growing in application. Consumer goods increasingly fitted with Wi-Fi internet connectivity that gives additional and remote functions, but the game is to reduce inference while coping with spectrum capacity demands. Most people now expect to get reliable free Wi-Fi in their accommodation, from retailers and in some public areas. A major concern is that there should not be interference from any new service in adjacent spectrum. This is a pointed reference to a company that wants to use the 2.4 GHz spectrum for a satellite downlink, with fears that it could block out Wi-Fi. In the 5 GHz band the pressure is on too and could also threaten Wi-Fi. In Europe it has had some use for automatic vehicle communications, tolling and monitoring technology. The IARU is closely watching developments to avoid interference with the amateur service and amateur satellite service. A foot in the door! Ofcom, the UK regulator, has published a consultation setting out plans for permitting the licence-exempt use of certain types of mobile phone repeaters, intended for in-home and in-vehicle use Their use by consumers is currently unlawful, as the type of wideband repeater that we come across today can cause interference or other adverse effects to mobile services for other nearby customers. The effect of OFCOMs proposals would be that repeaters which meet requirements would be available for consumers to buy and install lawfully themselves. This relates specifically to static repeaters, intended for in-home use; and ‘low gain’ repeaters, intended for use in cars. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/consultations-and-statements/category-2/mobile-phone-repeaters GERMAN MESSAGE FROM ENIGMA MACHINE DECODED APRIL 2017 40m Enigma Message decrypted at Bletchley Park On Friday, April 7 the amateur radio station DL Ø HNF transmitted an Enigma encrypted message on 7036 kHz to Bletchley Park in the UK. DL Ø HNF is the club station at the Heinz Nixdorf Museum in Germany. The encrypted telegraphy message they transmitted was received at the home of the World War Two UK Codebreakers in Bletchley Park. There the message was fed into a replica of the Turing Bombe which enabled the encryption to be cracked. Hawaii County Mayor Harry Kim designated the month of April as “Roger and Barbara Darling Month” and personally presented a certificate to the couple at a recent gathering in Hilo. Hawaii Gov. David Ige also sent each a Special Recognition certificate, congratulating the Darlings on their hard work and service. The International Humanitarian Award recognizes Amateur Radio’s unique role in international communication and the assistance amateurs regularly provide to people in need. In January, the ARRL Board of Directors cited the Darlings’ work on behalf of past International Humanitarian Award winner John Bush, KH6DLK/V63JB, and their “significant material support” to his efforts of assistance to the Federated States of Micronesia. Same-Band "Duelling CQs" Now Prohibited in All ARRL Contests ARRL has clarified its rules for all contests to clearly prohibit the practice of interleaved CQs -- also known as "duelling CQs" -- on two or more frequencies in the same band. The clarification is an extension of existing rules that permit only "one transmitted signal," and it formalizes what had been a "gentleman's agreement." "ARRL reviewed it, concurred that this is technically occupying two channels, and in consultation with several members of the Board of Directors -- who had been contacted by concerned parties -- and the Programs and Services Committee, it was concluded we needed to 'clarify' our existing rules," ARRL Contest Branch Manager Bart Jahnke, W9JJ, said. The issue arose when a multioperator team successfully employed in-band interleaved CQs in the last ARRL International DX SSB event, substantially boosting their score. ARRL say Radio Amateurs Supported Colombia Landslide Disaster Relief and Recovery Effort the disastrous landslide in Colombia left more than 260 dead and devastated the town of Mocoa. Many others were injured or are missing, and search crews are still trying to find survivors in the rubble. An emergency Amateur Radio network was activated on 40 meters, 7.093-7.095 MHz, to support the relief and recovery effort. April 22nd is Marconi Day Dozens of official award stations have registered to take part in the 2017 International Marconi Day event, this year being held on 22nd April. All contacts counting toward the Marconi Award must be made on HF with registered stations, but other participating stations do not need to be registered to claim awards. The event is not a contest, but an opportunity for amateurs around the world to make point-to-point contact with historic Marconi sites, using HF communication techniques descended from those used by Marconi, and to earn an attractive award certificate for working or hearing a number of Marconi stations. All you need is a log extract - you don't need QSL cards. The Kerry Amateur Radio Group based in County Kerry Ireland will participate as an Award Station in this year's International Marconi Day event 22nd April set up on the site of the former Marconi Station at Ballybunnion. Two HF SSB stations are planned for this year on the site as well as a HF data station. The special event callsign EI 6 YXQ will be used to commemorate the original callsign of YXQ used by the Marconi Station in Ballybunnion which made world history by achieving the first transatlantic voice radio transmission in 1919 to the Marconi Station located in Newfoundland in the East to West direction. This is the 30th year the International Marconi Day event will mark the birth of wireless pioneer Guglielmo Marconi. He dubbed the receiver TuTiouner and the software Tutioune (phonetic French transcript for “You tune”). (1000utc during daylight saving) 90th anniversary of G6YL The late Barbara Dunn G6YL recalled that she first heard Morse code at the age of 10 In 1906 a talk and demonstration of wireless was given at her school and she eagerly volunteered to take part in the demonstration. She remembered sending S O S in Morse and said she was thrilled. In 1923 her father purchased a wireless set to listen to the new British Broadcasting Company transmissions from 2LO in London on 350 metres (857 kHz). In early February 1923 while listening to 2LO she noticed a rasping kind of interference on the transmission. She was unable to tune the interference out so decided to try and find out the cause. In those days most of the smaller ships operating in the Thames still used spark transmissions which spread over a wide frequency range and it was these spark Morse signals on 600 metres (500 kHz) that Barbara had been picking up. Fascinated by the signals she decided to teach herself Morse code by copying down the dots and dashes as fast as she could. She recalled that in 1927 she was "bullied" by the "Old Timers" G2LZ and Gerald Marcuse G2NM into taking her Morse test. G2NM said if she passed he would send her an old Split Hartley transmitter which she could keep if she managed to get it to work again. At the Morse test the examiner gave her a column from The Times newspaper to send but the examiner had to stop her sending because she sent all the brackets, colons and semicolons in the article. Only the plain text had been required. She received her transmitting licence G6YL on April 13, 1927.
