IN OUR 20TH YEAR OF NON STOP NEWS WIA Board Talk WIA ANZAC 100 events for September WIA wishes all a Happy Fathers Day 2015 THESE STORIES AND MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA 2015 AND FOR WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 6 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Poor weather & propagation faced by VI0ANZAC Despite adverse Antarctic winter weather conditions the VI0ANZAC event in the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA) ANZAC 100 program made it to air last weekend. The propagation saw 56 contacts logged. The operator, Doug VK0DMV, had been eager to use VI0ANZAC, but an earlier plan was postponed when a severe storm struck. However, VI0ANZAC did go ahead on August 29-30. Because of the wind at the time official permission was needed to venture outdoors. The icy wind howled outside at 80 knots as the operator stayed overnight in an antenna shack. Doug VK0DMV expressed sincere thanks to all who made contact and for a great couple of days. Many more listened or had signals too weak they could not be heard. Doug sent his apologises for having to leave early on Sunday, but a break in the weather meant an exit from the antenna shack. Even then it took about 45 minutes with frequent stops to clear an ice build-up on the windscreen that cut visibility. VI0ANZAC log sheets are now on the eQSL system and enable verification of contact with Casey Station VKFF 571 by Park Chasers. The WIA expresses sincere thanks to Doug VK0DMV and his sterling effort and to the Australian Antarctic Division for their assistance that made it all possible. Now to this month’s activities Amateur Radio Experimenters Group (AREG) using VK100ANZAC will have a digital voice mode station to commemorate the 26th Infantry Battalion arrival at Gallipoli, and its deployment to Taylor's Hollow. The event at Younghusband South Australia for 48 hours from September 11, recognises the Battalion’s efforts while promoting FreeDV - a relatively new digital voice mode. David Rowe VK5DGR, one of the architects of FreeDV, will be on hand, with club showing how easy it can be use FreeDV on it’s the AREG website. Here from VK5 is Ben with more on this activation of VK100ANZAC FreeDV is a new digital voice mode developed by an international group of amateurs, led by David Rowe, VK5DGR. FreeDV operates at very low bit rates and narrow bandwidths using an open source digital voice compression algorithm (Codec2) developed by David. As such, it is ideal for use on HF. The aim is to encourage as many amateurs as possible to “come and try” this new digital HF mode, joining us and as many other FreeDV operators as possible, in making contacts via digital HF voice around Australia and across the world. AREG, in conjunction with David VK5DGR, one of the co-creators of FreeDV, will be activating a special event FreeDV HF station under the Wireless Institute of Australia's special event call-sign, VK100ANZAC over next weekend. Various bands will be used, with the primary call channels being 14.236MHz and 7.175MHz, +/-QRM. The VK100ANZAC net control station will be listening and intermittently calling on FreeDV on the 20m and 40m bands as follows; Saturday evening September 12th from 1130UTC (9pm Australian Central Standard Time (ACST)) beaming short path North America on 20m (west coast). Sunday morning September 13th from 2130-2330UTC (7am-9am ACST) on 20m beaming long path North America (east coast) Sunday morning from 2230-0130UTC (8-11am ACST) will see local VK contacts targeted on 40m 0430-0730 UTC (2-5pm ACST) will focus signals towards Europe Long Path as well as VK on 20m. 0530-0830 UTC (3-6pm ACST) will see 40m targeting VK/ZL again During the middle of the day on Sunday we may activate on 15m as well targeting Asia/Japan/Northern VK. On the following weekend the Adelaide Hills Amateur Radio Club uses VK100ANZAC for 48-hours from September 19, to commemorate the awarding of the Victoria Cross to Roy Inwood during WWI. It will be portable from a Military vehicle museum at Edinburgh, north of Adelaide. The open air operation is to run a Yaesu FT857d transceiver into linked dipoles, trying 40m, 20m, and 15m between 0100 UTC and 0700 UTC. Later in September, VI5ANZAC will be activated by North East Radio Club on September 25 and for three days to commemorate the 11th Light Horse Regiment Battle of Samakh, Palestine. September 26, and for 120 hours at the Z Special Force memorial, Dayman Point in south-east Queensland, VI4ANZAC will commemorate Operation Jaywick in 1943 that sunk seven enemy ships at Singapore. The West Australia Defence Amateur Radio User Group is getting ready to fire up VI6ANZAC at the HMAS Stirling facility Perth on September 26, to mark the anniversary of two WWI Victoria Cross recipients. With more on that operation it's to Andrew VK6AS Another VK100 ANZAC Activation in VK6 running from Friday 25 Sep to Sunday 27 Sep 2015. The VK6 Garden Island team are activating Garden Island off the coast of Perth to commemorate 100 years since The Great War. The WIA have granted the use of VK 100 ANZAC for the duration of the activation. The Island is home to HMAS Stirling, Fleet Base West, the Royal Australian Navy's home on the West coast. The island offers a unique location to operate amateur radio and is known to offer very low QRM. Many thanks are due to the base Commanding Officer for her permission to use the site The team would like you to get involved. For those in VK6, or are prepared to travel, there are opportunities to get onto the Island during the activation in your own vehicle or grab a lift with one of the organisers. Two absolutely fantastic locations on the west of the island are available for use. These locations will offer brilliant HF and interesting 2m operations. To commemorate ANZAC 100 a series of articles appears in Amateur Radio magazine. During WWII was cobbled together a transmitter known as "Winnie the war winner,' a most important iconic item from Australia's involvement. Max Loveless, an active radio amateur in Hobart from 1937 where he operated as VK7ML, was referred to as the No. 1 man in the project engaging a team of four signallers. First published in the March 2011 edition of OTN, the journal of the Radio Amateurs Old Timers Club of Australia, it has been contributed by Bill Roper VK3BR. The author was inspired by his Australian War Memorial visit, which houses an incredible piece of Australian radio history, "Winnie the war winner". Several articles have been published over the years, but with good photographs and words this amazing radio was revisited. For long weeks after the Japanese landed at Dili Timor, in February 1942, nothing was heard from Australia's Sparrow Force. Most of the Sparrow Force had surrendered, while some were 'guerrillas' who remained fighting with no supplies and no contact with Australia. Then in April, a dramatic radio signal was heard in Darwin: "Force intact. Still fighting. Badly need boots, money, quinine, tommy-gun ammunition." This signal was transmitted by 'Winnie the war winner', built from scraps. The plan by Max Loveless was that all the commandos looked out for anything that might serve as a radio part. There were two previous failed attempts using other equipment, caused by inadequate tools of a tomahawk, a pair of pliers, and a screwdriver, and the failure to accurately calibrate the frequency. Max Loveless later designed and built a third transmitter. With it Darwin was signalled on April the 18th 1942, but did not receive a reply. On the night of April 19th an answer was received from Darwin. The batteries failed, but on the following night they reached Darwin again. The Darwin radio room was suspicious and demanded proof of the men's identity. After verification, the guerrillas of Sparrow Force again repeated their dramatic signal. The Royal Australian Air Force parachuted items, and the Royal Australian Navy began a regular run from Darwin to Timor with supplies. It lost the destroyer HMAS Voyager and the corvette HMAS Armidale during these supply runs. The commanding officer of Sparrow Force later said but for the amazing job done by these four signallers led by Max Loveless, they would not have been able to contact Australia. WIA Special-Purpose Grants are available to affiliated clubs and individual members. They are also be open to non-members and non-affiliated organisations, so long as the project is for the benefit of amateur radio and the non-member or non-affiliated organisation contributes at least 50% of their own funds. The closing date for Grant submissions is 18 December, 2015. In last month’s edition of AR, our President identified the need to review the way the WIA operated to ensure that it continued to meet the needs of the membership. A review of the operation of the WIA office was recently completed and discussed by the WIA Board. As a result it was determined that the existing office structure did not meet our current and future needs. A decision was made to remove the position of Office Manager and replace it with an Executive Officer. As a result Mal Brooks has left the WIA, we thank him for his past service and wish him well for the future. The Executive Officer position will take a much more active role in the development and implementation of strategies designed to increase membership and improve member services. Indian Homebrewers Meet-Field Day The first Indian Homebrewers Meet-Field Day, was successfully held on 22nd and 23rd August at YMCA Camp, Yelagiri. The event was truly a unique event. The crowd consisted of radio amateurs from far flung places, which indicated their keen interest in learning more and meeting people who shared similar interests. Over all, it was a unique opportunity to SWL's and Radio amateurs alike, who could interact with others and learn something new along the way. The organisers hope the event provided newcomer's to the hobby with plenty of opportunities, and in also engaging operators and Homebrewers alike to come together and share their experiences. Everybody wins! Quite a long list of Rules applied to this gathering including:- No "chief" guests. All in attendance are guests, and no one person is more important or higher than the other. No profit- No Loss. This is pretty much self-explanatory. If you want to see a profit out of such an event, look elsewhere. No "Commercial sale". This is pretty much an extension of the previous guideline. No Sales counters, no junk sales, no stalls. UK Veterans at Eagle’s Nest introduced to ham radio The Eagle’s Nest at Sauk Centre serves as a halfway house for veterans who have a hard time making their way back into civilian life. The typical stay is about six months with an average of 75 residents. Some veterans stay much longer. Seven members of the Amateur Ham Radio group based in Little Falls, spent a Sunday afternoon conducting an introduction to ham radio for the veterans at the “Nest.” Many of the residents expressed a high interest in attending the session. Those who did attend learned a lot in a short amount of time. HUNGARY PUTS 5MHz TO THE TEST: Hungarian radio amateurs can now apply for permits to operate in the band from 5350 kHz to 5450 kHz, on a secondary basis. National Media & Infocommunications Authority, Hungary's telecommunications register, is granting the three-month permits largely for propagation research, with support from the Hungarian National Amateur Radio Society. The rules would likely: Restrict installation of alternative operating systems on your PC, like GNU/Linux, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, etc. Prevent research into advanced wireless technologies, like mesh networking and bufferbloat fixes Ban installation of custom firmware on your Android phone Discourage the development of alternative free and open source Wi-Fi firmware, like OpenWrt FCC is asking for comments on this proposal by October 9. Charles “Charlie” Hellman W2RP Licensed since 1925 has been presented with Historic 90th Anniversary Award Quarter Century Wireless Association, Inc. (QCWA) - an international organization of amateur ('ham') radio operators - presented a 90 Year Licensed Certificate Award (Serial #1) to Charles 'Charlie' Hellman W2RP. Mr. Hellman is 105 years of age and is the oldest living amateur radio operator in the United States and possibly the world. Charlie was licensed in 1925 as a 15 year-old, and joined QCWA in 1975 and is also a member of local QCWA Chapter 181 (Hudson Valley). The ARRL reports amateur repeaters have fallen victim to a Washington wildfire. Two Central Washington repeaters, owned and operated by the Lake Chelan Amateur Radio Club, have been destroyed by one of the wildfires raging in that state. The co-located machines, one on 2 meters and one on 6 meters, were sited on Slide Ridge near Manson. On August 27, the First Creek Fire completely levelled the building housing the repeaters. Scorched antennas and support structures are still standing but are likely beyond repair. He independently detected signals from the Apollo 11 astronauts on the lunar surface. Fortunately, his accomplishments were recorded and promptly published in the Louisville Courier-Journal Larry Baysinger was a technician for Louisville’s WHAS 840 AM radio. He was interviewed by the Collins Corporation who was very impressed that anyone could detect the Apollo signals with home-built equipment. Baysinger’s wife and daughter watched the Apollo 11 landing on TV while Baysinger listened via the homebrew equipment. The signal on the home-built equipment came through approximately 5-10 seconds earlier than the signal on TV. Baysinger figures the TV network put in a delay in case they needed to edit out anything embarrassing. When asked whether he found anything that NASA edited out – comments about things going wrong, the astronauts being loose with their language, or exclamations about meeting aliens! He said no – absolutely everything was transmitted to the public on TV. In fact he said, “that was kind of disappointing”. Part of the idea of this project was to hear the unedited “real story”, and it turned out there was nothing edited out. He did not attempt to eavesdrop on any other Apollo missions. After Apollo 11 he moved on to other projects, but his noisy though they be' audio recordings live on.
