Blue Mountains bushfires - WICEN helps Television has beamed into our lounge-rooms the devastation as thousands of firefighters battled numerous outbreaks in New South Wales. After more than a week that included high temperatures, low humidity and strong winds, coupled with a dry fuel load, more than 220 homes were destroyed. The insurance payout is $100 million. The arrival of cooler temperatures with a southerly change added pressure in some areas, but in the main proved favourable. WICEN was activated on Tuesday by the Volunteer Rescue Association (VRA), to provide manpower - after a State of Emergency was declared. WICEN NSW President Compton Allen VK2HDX said he thanked some 14 WICEN members who made themselves available. WICEN Publicity Officer, Julian Sortland VK2YJS said four WICEN members were sent to Lithgow as part of a VRA team of 24. The rest from WICEN are in reserve on standby and may be deployed later. "These personnel assisted police in carrying out their duties, such as road blocks, warning residents, and evacuations where required," said Julian VK2YJS. Those people from the disaster hit areas, including residents who have lost homes, are now receiving welfare assistance. We particularly think today of our National News broadcast teams in the Gosford/Wyong/Lake Macquarie areas led by John Williams VK2JJW and Frank Parker VK2FSP Publicity Officer Julian Sortland VK2YJS said on Thursday that due to an improvement in conditions in the Lithgow region, WICEN has been stood down prior to the commencement of the duties. While members of other Volunteer Rescue Association squads did work overnight on October the 23rd, it appears no further VRA involvement is required. The activity we enjoy has a mixed image among the general public and sadly this is often reflected by some of those who are radio amateurs themselves. The official definition of Amateur Radio includes the intercommunication between amateur stations solely with a personal aim and without pecuniary interest. A similar stuffy definition can be used to describe a diamond as a 'carboniferous solid.' But like a diamond, Amateur Radio can be a many-faceted gem of dazzling beauty. While a now old-fashioned view of Amateur Radio between World War II and the mobile phone or Internet age was attractive - that time has truly gone. Do some of today's radio amateurs inadvertently live in the past or incorrectly promote their hobby as being a modern recreational and vocational activity? Would you buy a new car built a decade ago, no matter how well it was marketed? Well, think about how all of us promote modern Amateur Radio. Venue is the EMDRC club rooms and grounds at 13a McCubbin St, Burwood (see http://www.emdrc.com.au/club_rooms.html for details). Enter via McCubbin St and you'll find a car park at the end of the driveway. For the many who attended last year, the format of the day will be similar, with some additional activities. In the car park, we will again be field testing portable microwave systems - 10GHz, 24GHz and, this time, 2.4GHz as well. We'll have a GPS-locked weak signal source, and field strength meter set up across the park. People can set up their systems along the pathway and compare signal strengths - received and transmit - with others. 240V will be available from the club rooms - BYO long extension lead. The EMDRC have several marquees that we can use if the weather is a little threatening. In the clubrooms, we'll be holding an informal microwave homebrew show and tell. People are encouraged to bring along microwave systems either complete or part-built and share info with others. Graham VK3XDK will be there with some of his systems and will be more than happy to provide assistance to others. The clubroom workshop facilities will also be available. We'll have the BBQ going at lunchtime. If you want something more exotic than a sausage in bread, then BYO is welcome. Later in the day, we're trying to line up a big-gun 10GHz EME station to provide us with a signal off the moon (once it rises). If you want to try "listening" for that, I'd recommend bringing along a digital setup as the signal is unlikely to be audible, but should be clearly visible on WSJT or Spectran. Of course, those interested in the Microwave bands but without equipment are more than welcome. Preparations are moving in to high gear and our secretary is shuffling emails in and to the various presenters, traders, exhibitors and support groups and services needed to run this largest event of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. This year we are trying something new. We intend to have Clubs Fair where clubs from NSW and further afield can present what they do and sign-up some new club members. The fair is in addition to the normal exhibitors and will most likely be located on one of the grassy areas around the racecourse. Letters have been sent out to all NSW clubs listed on the WIA website, so why not ask your club secretary if your club is taking part. The old transmissions are to disappear in favour of new TV with its multitude of channels. The former analogue frequencies are up for sale in the so-called digital dividend. (sourced to ARVictoria) End of the Centre Victoria RadioFest Australia's big event known as the Centre Victoria RadioFest at Kyneton, which proved to be very successful, although never designed to be a huge generator of profit, has ended. When introduced it instantly became a very much needed and different type of event, one that had been innovative and parts of it copied by others both locally and interstate. Unfortunately an increase in the site rental charge, double that paid last year, meant it could only continue in 2014 with a dramatic lift in charges for the sellers, higher admission costs, or be abandoned. It began as one of Australia's largest ham radio events in 2006 adding greatly to the amateur radio scene and held annually except in 2009. After lots of consideration, including going over its purpose and concept that was to be slightly expanded in 2014, the sad decision was made to reluctantly end it. WHAT COMES OUT OF THE TOP OF A THUNDERSTORM? In recent decades researchers have discovered some strange things happening in the cloud tops. High above ordinary lightning, exotic forms known as red sprites and blue elves shoot toward the heavens, as often as 500 times a day, Earth briefly mimics a supernova, producing a powerful blast of gamma-rays known as a Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flash or TGF. No one knows exactly how these phenomena are related either to each other or to the lightning down below. A new experiment called "Firestation" on board the ISS aims to find out. Firestation is a package of sensors designed to explore the links between TGFs, ordinary lightning, and sprites. The space station's orbit will carry Firestation directly above thousands of active thunderstorms during the one-year lifetime of the experiment. Unlike previous experiments in upper atmospheric lightning, Firestation has the unique ability to observe thunderstorms at multiple wavelengths simultaneously. It can record the radio static from lightning, measure its optical glow (including the red and blue light of sprites and elves), and detect the gamma-rays and electrons associated with TGFs and antimatter events. DENMARK radiomagonline say Denmark's Culture Agency has announced that parties to the media settlement of 2012-2014 have approved a revised timetable for the transition to digital radio there. Licenses for FM broadcasters will be extended until 2019, after which it is expected that analogue FM broadcasts will cease. The country also plans to transition from DAB to DAB+ in December 2014. Poland also is moving to Australia's DAB+ standard as we will hear shortly, however they have also announced the closure of their Polish Radio External short wave broadcasts. USA Xerox has turned 75 years of age. Seventy-five years ago, Chester Carlson created an easier way to duplicate information on paper. Named “xerography,” his invention revolutionized how information is shared and, ultimately, how office work gets done. Carlson, While tinkering in his lab in Astoria, Queens, had one simple objective in mind: “…to make office work a little more productive and a little less tedious.” INDIA Indian record for tracking Ham Radio balloon Global Brands Magazine features the High Altitude Balloon work of Dhruva Space and Indian radio amateurs. Dhruva Space in association with Indian Institute of Astrophysics is gearing up to observe comet ISON when it passes earth on November 28, 2013 using a high altitude balloon platform. Weekly test flights are in progress as part of the preparations and one such flight, on October 13, saw the balloon carrying a 5 kilogram payload reach a peak altitude of 21 km and it travelled over 600 km into the Arabian Sea. What makes this test flight special is that the ground station at Bangalore and the two mobile payload recovery teams were able to receive the 145.765 MHz FM APRS radio signals from the balloon for over 12 hours without any disruption. ============================================================================= Amateur Radio Newsline THE OTHER EFFECT OF THE SOLAR CYCLE As almost every ham knows, the number of sunspots rises and falls in a regular cycle that repeats every 11 years, but there's a lot more to the story. Here's Amateur Radio Newsline's Cheryl Lasek, K9BIK, with that part of the story: Sunspots are among the least dramatic activities in a solar cycle. This is because they are easy to count and closely correlated with flares and other indications of solar activity. As such astronomers and scientists have used them for centuries to monitor variations in the sun's activity. But it is Solar Flares and Coronal Mass Ejections that pose the biggest risk to power grids and communications systems here on Earth. These take place when billions of tones of solar plasma erupt from the surface of the sun and are flung out into space at speeds up to millions of miles per second. Variations in the amount of heat and light reaching the Earth's surface as a result of the changes in the 11 year cycle are tiny. Total solar output reaching the surface varies by just 1.3 Watts per square meter or 1/10th of 1 per cent between the maximum and minimum phases of a solar cycle. However some researchers say that even this miniscule variation has profound impacts on climate and weather. They note that rainfall, cloud formation and river run-off are all strongly correlated with the sun's 11-year cycle. All in all, the impact is far smaller than the warming associated with other sources of climate change. For the Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Cheryl Lasek, K9BIK, in Zion, Illinois. One thing that solar activity cannot explain long-term trends in global temperatures such as those associated with global warming. That said there are some researchers believe that it may have a noticeable impact over shorter timescales. POLAND NATIONAL PUBLIC BROADCASTER ADOPTS DAB+ National public broadcaster Polish Radio has begun transmitting in the DAB+ digital audio transmission system. The Director and Editor-in-Chief of Polish Radio 4 said that adopting the digital standard enables the it to increase its coverage area, improve sound quality and disseminate programming nationwide. WW2 GERMAN ENIGMA MACHINE TO BE AUCTIONED A rare German Enigma encoding machine used by the Nazis to send secret messages during the Second World War will go on sale in the United Kingdom later this month. The machine, built in 1944, was part of the German intelligence operation thwarted by British counter-intelligence working out of Bletchley Park. Enigma machines were used through the war by the German military, but this was a later model which sent out even more heavily encrypted signals than earlier versions. A specialist from London auctioneers Bonhams said the untouched and unrestored device is especially valuable because it still has many of its original parts, and was not modified after the war. The unit comes with an original ebonite plugboard, which when added to the Enigma would swap pairs of letters. For example, pressing the F key would send a letter B to be scrambled at the Enigma’s rotors. This of course would require a matching device at the other end to make sense of the message. It says that encrypted voice traffic has been operating on 21000.0 kHz on USB. Also that the in-band synchronizing signal was always audible and quite strong. The transmitter sending out these transmissions is believed to be located in or near Nizhny Tagil in Russia but its purpose is unknown. The newsletter also reports that the Russian military have also been using other frequencies in our 7, 14 and 21 MHz bands and have been operating an Over The Horizon radar between 3500 and 3800 kHz.
