Hello I’m Bob Vk6POP the JOTA JOTI Coordinator for Scouts Australia. This JOTA JOTI edition of the news comes to you from the Peter Hughes Scout Communication Centre in Perth. The team this week is myself VK6POP Bob, Onno VK6FLAB, Miles VK6MAB, Davis VK6FAME, Barb VK6FPAX, Jeff Barb’s OM, and Flynn VK6FFFF and if that doesn't fox you, nothing will. This week we'll hear about zombies in a Scout camp, pirates in Australia, crystal sets in the Illawarra, and the Governor General’s going to talk to us. THESE STORIES AND MORE IN THIS EDITION OF NEWS FROM THE WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA FOR WEEK COMMENCING OCTOBER 16 2011. SILENT KEY Ian VK1BG writes.. "I have today been advised by his wife, Lesley, that Keith Malcolm, VK1KM, passed away suddenly at his home Thursday Oct 13th. This news came as a dreadful shock, and I am sure that we will all be saddened by it. Over many years, Keith has been a major advocate for the WIA and Amateur Radio in both national and international forums, and became very well known for his efforts. He will be sorely missed by his many friends. Keith is survived by his wife and three adult children." Saturday October 15 at 1pm Local time Australia's Governor-General, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC addressed the Guides and Scouts of Australia in her opening address for JOTA 2011 In the welcome to this, the 54th Jamboree On the Air and 15th Jamboree On The Internet Her Excellency mentioned how we’ve had our share of natural disasters in Australia recently with bushfires, floods, cyclones and other storms. And globally, we’ve come together following the devastating earthquakes and tsunami in Japan and the awful series of earthquakes and aftershocks in Christchurch, New Zealand. She went on to say "In some countries, Scouts and Guides contribute directly to the relief effort after a disaster strikes, working in first aid posts, helping with cooking and serving food, or providing accommodation in tents that they erected. Often these are poorer countries with fewer resources to call on, so people in organizations such as Guides and Scouts are called on to help those in need." In this the JOTA weekend we hope you make new friends and catch up with some old ones. Pirate Radio Station Stomped On By VK Authorities The Australian Communications and Media Authority has stomped on a pirate radio station that was operating from Chadstone, Melbourne operating on 1485kHz AM could be heard for up to 10km, and had been broadcasting for about a week, mainly in the evenings, music from MyMP, an outfit which broadcasts mainly middle-of-the-road music via DAB+ digital radio. "Following a complaint," ACMA reports gravely, "inspectors from ACMA's Field Operations Section used advanced direction-finding equipment to pinpoint the exact location of the transmitter"- and closed it down. Zombie attack during Scouting Radio Jamboree Coral Gables Florida USA has one of the oldest Boy Scout troops in that nation. This weekend Troop 7 are working with First Responders, public safety communications professionals and amateur radio operators to earn their radio merit badges as part of scouting's world-wide Jamboree on the Air. "If there are Zombies around, we definitely think that the police and fire departments should be involved,” said Dan Deveson, an assistant scoutmaster with the troop. “We wanted to find a way that the boys could learn how the pros use their radios, and few things are so important to a 12-year-old as thwarting Zombie attacks.” The troop are broadcasting Zombie Action Reports around the world using amateur radio equipment provided by licensed radio operator volunteers. “In case of hurricanes, or Zombies, amateur radio operators often work with public safety professionals to provide community support. That’s exactly the sort of activity that modern scouting is all about,” said Deveson. HAMS ACROSS AUSTRALIA. The WIA Board has appointed Alan Shannon VK4SN for the balance of Ken’s term. Once again, amateur radio is indebted to Ken for his commitment to the Institute and its activities. Welcome to QNews from VK4WIA. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. Long established on the amateur radio calendar is the Jamboree of the Air, now run in conjunction with the Jamboree on the Internet. This activity brings youth together via the capability of technology to share experience locally and globally. Whether it is one amateur or a club contribution, there are the necessary preparations to undertake. Site, activities to be supported and equipment readiness all have to be addressed. This is the age of the touch screen and instant messaging and as interesting as CW and SSTV can be to the aficionados we need to be both practical and up to date. To this end, a discussion with the Scout Leaders who will be attending and a look at the various badge requirements may give some insight into appropriate presentations of the amateur radio activity. Remember that glint in the eye when enthusiasm bursts through. We can all have it but it is good to share our enthusiasm with others. Members of the scouting movement are especially welcome during JOTA. If you hear a voice in your mind saying "do your best" then remember the correct response is still to "do our best". I'm Geoff Emery and that's what I think....how about you? (REPORT IN AUDIO ONLY AGAIN THIS WEEK) Ipswich & District Radio Club P.O. Box 250 Ipswich Qld 4305 www.vk4wip.com vk4wip@wia.org.au This is Allan VK4FABR with a round-up of news from the Ipswich and District Radio Club. While this first item is a few weeks old, we wanted to let you know that back in August the club’s Sandy Cape DX’pediton was a great success. The only serious lesson learnt from the weekend was that sleep is over-rated and entirely optional when there are many stations to be worked. The club would also like to thank the sponsors for their terrific support – Ipswich City Council and VK4ICE Communications. The design of the VI4FI QSL card is now complete and can be viewed at the official website www.sandycape2011.com An easy to remember schedule for club meetings has been introduced. Business meetings are now on the fourth Monday each month, and social meetings the second Monday of each month. Both start at 7.30pm at the club’s headquarters - 10 Deebing Street on Denmark Hill. The club social meetings always uncover a few yarns and war stories over a cuppa, and often see the renewal of old friendships. Members, guests and visitors are very welcome. Thoughts will be turning to Christmas soon and once again the IDRC will be holding its annual Christmas gathering at Banjo's Bar & Function Centre in Bell Street. Reserve this date now -Saturday November 5, 2011. Start time is 11am with a 2 course meal and finishing up around 2:30pm. Cost is $20 per person, payable by October 31st. Please confirm your attendance, number of persons plus payment to either Derek VK4MIA or Paul VK4FPDW prior to the 31st. Reporting from Ipswich, I’m Allan, VK4FABR. ILLAWARRA VK2 This JOTA weekend some of you may be interested in a building competition taking place and you do NOT need yet be a fully qualified Ham Operator. Jeff VK4ZPP is here with the details. The Illawarra Amateur Radio Society currently has a construction competition running that is open to amateur radio operators within VK. There are prizes to be allocated in two categories. Entry is easy, just build a crystal set. Judging will be based on some simple rules:- The crystal set must work i.e. receive a transmitted signal. The crystal set can receive either commercial, broadcast or amateur signals. No external power other than the received signal can be used. Additional points will be gained by utilizing recycled parts, or home made components. Additional points will be gained for Innovative design, and unique concepts. The finished article does not need to be aesthetically pleasing. Testing will be carried out at Industry World Centre, Wollongong 8/11/2011 (Between 19:30 – 22:00 Hrs). The judge’s decision will be final. The judging of the contest will be at the IARS November meeting. The Crystal set will need to be bought to the meeting on this evening, alternatively they can be posted to the Secretary Illawarra amateur radio society, by the meeting date which is 8th November 2011. Correct postage and packaging cost must be included if you require the project to be returned after the competition. Note that this project is a receive only construction, so it is therefore open to all license classes in VK. Why not put together a club entry? Old hands, why not take a newer member of the hobby under your wing and show them how construction was done when you first discovered radio. Results and awards will be presented at the December 2011 meeting. The two entry categories are:- Category 1:- Financial members of the IARS First Prize :- 2 metre Handheld radio Second Prize:- Quality Screwdriver Set Third Prize:- Lightweight Headphone Set Numerous consolation prizes such as mouse mats, baseball caps Category 2:- All other VK Hams First Prize:- 2 metre Handheld Radio Second Prize:- Quality Screwdriver Set Third Prize:- Lightweight Headphone Set Details are available on the Illawarra amateur Radio Society’s web site http://www.iars.org.au or email the secretary vk2vvv@wia.org.au EDUCATION YOUTH AND ADVANCEMENT OF AMATEUR RADIO www.hamcollege.com.au Northern NSW and want to become a licensed Ham Operator? The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) met and on the agenda was how to help with flood crisis relief. Speaking before the first meeting of the commission since the royal command was issued endorsing the appointment of its 11 members, the NBTC chairman said it was urgent that telecommunications be improved in flood-hit areas. He said the NBTC gave a repeater to the Amateur Radio Operators Group of Ayutthaya to help strengthen its radio signal to cover a wider area. Certainly NOT "Freedom Radio" any longer. After some 8 years of broadcasting from Baghdad "Porky Pig" uttered those immortal words "that’s all folks" and the Coalitions radio station in Iraq went silent. With the troops leaving that land replacing VOF will be European Satellite shows on the local radio. BBC Radio 4 long wave, which transmits on the 198 kilohertz frequency, relies on ageing transmitter equipment that uses a pair of valves - no longer manufactured - to function. The valves, at Droitwitch in Worcestershire, are so rare that engineers say there are fewer than 10 in the world, and the BBC has been forced to buy up the entire global supply. Each lasts anywhere between one and 10 years and when one of the last two blows the service will go quiet. Mark Thompson, Director-General of the BBC, has signalled the beginning of the end for the 198 long-wave service, which is still used by 90,000 homes in Britain to receive Radio 4 in areas where short-range FM does not penetrate.
