Its members hope all radio amateurs will join in the celebration. Part of the activity includes an operating award. During the celebratory period which began August 1 and rolls along until November 30, contact with members gains two points. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. As WIA President Michael Owen, VK3KI, reported a while back, the Foundation Licence has stopped the previous trend of amateur numbers dropping. Times have moved on and our once favourite shops have rationalised their inventories to reflect purchasing trends. In a population of 22 millions, a licensed amateur community of about 15,000 means we are spread very thinly when retailers come to swap our dollars for their products. Some retail spokes persons have been decrying the use of "on line" buying. Well for me being able to buy items that are no longer available from local outlets let's me pursue some of my radio interests which would otherwise be denied. I know from researching purchases that there can be equivalent items for sale locally but often at twice the price I can buy them in from overseas. I also know that the cost of freight from U.S.A. can be a large component of the total cost. With our dollar matching the greenback, it looks tempting to purchase from US book stores. Add in the postage and packing and then check with WIA Bookshop and you are more inclined to buy locally. We are fortunate that as some of the store front retailers drop hobby products we have more enthusiasts building successful on-line businesses in VK. With on-line payment and ordering we are perhaps better served now than in past times. We just need internet access to still buy Australian. I'm Geoff Emery and that's what I think.....how about you? Hello, this is Doug Friend VK4OE from the Brisbane VHF Group and, on behalf of the group, I want to make sure that everyone knows about two days coming up that will be devoted to the absolutely fascinating and satisfying area of our great hobby - amateur microwaves! In South-East Queensland there is growing interest in microwaves by quite a few radio amateurs. Here we're talking about those bands above 1 gigahertz - and there are many - starting at 1296 MHz. Several amateurs have equipment for a number of microwave bands up and working and they are ready to go out to high places to use what they have made. Some others have started to make gear and will value an opportunity to test what they have produce so far in the presence of encouraging friends. So, on Sunday the 25th of this month, we'll be running a "test and tune" day for microwave gear. Anyone who has completed or half-completed projects that need testing can come along to Rob Bathgate, VK4ZDX's place at 53 Arrol Street, Camp Hill and we'll have power meters, spectrum analysers and other test gear available. There'll also be several experienced microwave amateurs there to meet and discuss things with. Even if you have only a budding interest in amateur microwave bands or technology, the day will also be an opportunity to become more enthused with the subject. Then, on Sunday the 16th of October it'll be a real live, out in the field, test and demonstration day for microwave gear. Different stations will be located on different hills around the great South-East, and the aim will be to demonstrate how microwaves really can be a lot of fun. Firstly I should thank all those f-calls that contributed to the call-back last week. If you know of any f-calls that are not listening to the broadcast, tell them about it and who knows what might happen. When I started this hobby I did what I am beginning to suspect many newcomers to the field did. I asked around what things to do and who to talk to, then I made my first purchases. I've now spent some of my hard-earned money and to-date I'm very happy about what I bought, but along the way I learnt a few things that I think might be helpful. My biggest frustration in going out to get my kit was this phenomenon that seemed to plague me where-ever I went. "Why can I not just buy a standard kit with radio, power-supply and antenna?" All in one box, all from one supplier, all shipped to my door, point and click-style. My limited experience to date tells me that you can in fact do that - it's called a hand-held all-in-one transceiver and it is all that. Of course there are trade-offs such as transmit power, battery life, band-availability, user-interface, etc. I'm extremely familiar with the I.T. industry. The answer to any given question asked by any given person is always "it depends". I've learnt that Amateur Radio is exactly the same - and as an aside, I suspect it's true for many more fields. Back to buying a kit. Why not all-in-one? Why is this so hard? Well, you now know the answer, "it depends". It depends on many things, where you're going to install it, how you're going to use it, how much space you have, how much money, whom you can buy the gear from, etc. etc. So, my observation today is that for every HAM there's a solution - and for every solution there's an alternative - or six. You can buy your gear brand new, like I did, or you can buy it second or third hand. Perhaps you were given a set. In the end, it doesn't matter what you have when you get started, just that you actually do that, get started. I'm sure that as I learn more I'll know more and be able to reflect on the choices I've made to date, but in the end, it's up to you to get started. Ethiopia came back on the air May 30, 2011, with the re-opening of the Ethiopian Amateur Radio Society station ET 3 AA. The Board of Directors of The Yasme Foundation became aware that 25 club members were scheduled to take the amateur radio license examination in late July and that the fee for taking the exam was about one month’s salary in Ethiopia. Accordingly, the Board voted unanimously in favour of a grant to cover one-half of the examination fees for all 25 applicants, the remaining one-half having been previously committed from the Radio Society of Great Britain. The Yasme Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation organized to conduct scientific and educational projects related to Amateur Radio. FCC ISSUES EXPERIMENTAL SPACE LICENSE FPOR 2 METER AND 70 CM OPERATIONS The FCC has issued a new experimental license with the call letters WF2XSP to one James Cutler to operate in 144 to 146 MHz and 437 to 439 MHz spectrum. This, for testing an image processing algorithm that will be used on a future space flight mobile, Low Earth Orbit operations ranging from 450 to 820 kilometres in altitude. The FCC announcement made no other reference to the nature of Cutler’s experimentation nor why he requested to do so in the amateur 2 meter and 70cm bands. QRZ.com lists six radio amateurs by the name of James Cutler, but its unknown if any of them are the same James Cutler who has obtained the Experimental License from the FCC. LED lighting can cause radio interference Thilo, DL9KCE, writes on the IARU Region 1 site of the problems LED lighting can cause. More and more LED lights are entering the market and are being used by radio amateur and their neighbours. There is a limit to maximum disturbance voltage on the mains port defined in EN55015, which is equivalent to the protection of EN55022, however it is not fully implemented within the EU due to a transition period of the standard. As consequence, European Hams can observe some LED lights causing only little trouble, others however cause a great amount of harmful interference due to mains line radiation. As worst case, some LED lights which could be as far as 40 - 60 dB over the limit on some frequencies. We suggest VK hams monitor the development and make own measurements, if feasible and report to WIA. Bondi Beach one week, Outer Space the next. KiwiSAT Taking New Zealand into Space! Fourth-year honours students and a Masters student from the School of Engineering and Advanced Technology at the Albany campus have been awarded a $7,500 grant from the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters’ Radio Science Education Trust to develop the software. The micro satellite is the size of a basketball and will be launched from a Russian rocket in the northern hemisphere when the project is finished. KiwiSAT is being designed and built by a team of volunteers from New Zealand Radio Amateurs supported by Massey and various corporate sponsors. It will connect with amateur radio stations globally and will carry out experimental work in small satellite Attitude Determination and Control (ADAC) – a low cost control system that works through interaction with the Earth’s magnetic field to position the satellite at a specific attitude. Still no word however on completion and launch dates. A separate frequency allocation for BPL? The IARU Region 1 EMC working group discussed BPL (PLT) at its meeting in Sun City August 13 and say there are plans to use and may be even allocate the frequency range of 30 - 80 MHz to BPL, for several reasons. One is that the frequency range is not used as intensive and the amount of possible interference is expected to be less. Recommendation: To support a separate frequency allocation for BPL equipment. In further Broadband by Powerline (BPL) networking technology (aka PLT), we know it has a reputation for causing widespread interference to radio reception. Now there are plans to install them at sea. London-based company Gentay Ltd has announced BPL networking technology devices for use on vessels plying the seven seas! Eric VK7NFI, Dick, VK7DIK and Wayne VK7NET, did the usual at Wynyard with the Table Cape lighthouse. The Wynyard Municipal council allowed access to the lighthouse building to allow the tying off of antennas to the top handrails of the lighthouse. Dion VK7DB did a first time activation of the Sandy Cape lighthouse on the rugged west coast. Getting to this location prove relatively easy despite the poor weather prior to the event. The only access is via about 20km of beach tracks and a few river crossings. Propagation conditions were good for all and it proved to be a successful event, with all looking forward to next year's event. SPECIAL EVENT STATIONS, DX and BEACON AND NET ADVICE The 22nd Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will be held in Perth, VK6, October 28 29 30 and to mark the occasion VI6CHOGM will on air from the Peter Hughes Scout Communications Centre in East Cannington, across as many modes and bands as possible A number of special event stations will be on air to mark the anniversary of the terrorist attack on the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York. In remembrance of those who died from the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, several stations are planned. (arvictoria) WIRELESS WEATHER (this story in audio by felix 4fuq is in wia upload area for you) Stanford physicists probing the sun's deep interior have successfully predicted the emergence of sunspots on the surface a full two days before they appear, providing the first early warning of the violent solar storms that can endanger astronauts in space, disrupt electric power grids on Earth, and plunge cities into darkness. SFGate.com say solar physicist David Hathaway at NASA's Marshall Space Centre called the development "an important result." "It's long been our hope to see the storms of sunspots before they show up," Hathaway said. The experiments that led to the announcement in the Journal Science were conducted by Stathis Ilonidis, a graduate student in physics at Stanford and his colleagues. Analysing signals from a satellite peering at the sun, they detected the acoustic signs of four electromagnetic storms that were being generated as turbulence 40,000 miles deep in what Ilonidis calls "the roaring ocean" of the sun 's interior. The system will have to be refined and proven, the scientists cautioned. BROADCAST MONITORING SWL AND SCANNER NEWS In the UK Isle of Wight "oldies" station "Angel FM" had their transmitter go of air due to bad weather. To the rescue? Non other than Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards who sent Angel Radio a check for approximately $4,800 to get the "Angel" flying again! Angel Radio only broadcasts music made before 1969 and promises "snap, crackle but no pop.” It's slogan is "Radio by older people ... for older people." It’s believed that Richards, 67, tunes in regularly. (published reports) INTRUDER WATCH - ENFORCEMENT ZONE HAMS AND TWO NATIONS PTT SUCCESSFUL IN REMOVING CODAR FROM 24 MHz BAND The Codar High Frequency Radar operating on 24920 to 25080 kHz from Northern Italy has gone off the air. This, thanks to a concerted effort by individual hams and members of various European Intruder Watch operations. A release by IARU Region 1 Intruder Watch specifically singles out DJ9KR, G4BOH and 9A5W for their assistance. It also thanks the British telecommunications regulator Ofcom and the German P-T-T for their direction finding assistance and other help. Italy revisited. Italian repeaters in Amateur Satellite segment Edition 58 of the IARU Region 1 VHF-UHF-UW Newsletter publishes the notes from the IARU-R1 Sun City conference and we see there are a number of Italian repeaters operating in the Amateur Satellite Service segment. These are causing interference to the uplinks and downlinks of Amateur Radio satellites and D-Star repeaters are the prevalent offenders. IARU Region One stresses the importance of satellite service and band plans also in case of the introduction of new modes. It is recommended to disconnect repeaters/nodes from international D-Star network if these are operated in contradiction to IARU-R1 band plans. Dutch authorities get tough with radio pirates. Radiocommunications Agency Netherlands will soon launch a new tougher policy to deal with pirate radio stations. The illegal broadcasters may soon have a fine of 2,500 euros imposed on them as soon as half an hour after they receive a warning letter. This the agency’s latest move in a cat and mouse game with the pirates. There have already been 1600 warnings this year, and 60 people have been fined. The radio pirates have responded by adapting their methods. They are now increasingly using mobile stations, so after receiving a warning letter they simply move to a different place to broadcast. The emperor penguin affectionately known as “Happy Feet”, has been released into the Southern Ocean some 700 kilometres south of New Zealand to begin the long swim home to Antarctica. The penguin's 2,000 kilometre trip began Fathers Day as he slid down a specially designed ramp from a research ship. He has been fitted with a transmitter that will allow zoologists and the general public to track his whereabouts. Happy Feet has been fitted with a Sirtrack KiwiSat 202 Satellite Transmitter which will transmit signals to satellites twice a day for three hours. Transmissions from the KiwiSat 202 will allow monitoring Happy Feet's position as he travels. Each new position will be plotted on the map so we can all follow his progress. It is not known which direction Happy Feet will travel, hopefully back to his home in the Antarctic, which makes this all the more fascinating and such a rare opportunity to learn about the movements of an amazing animal. Happy Feet spent six months at Wellington Zoo, after washing up on a New Zealand beach suffering from stomach ailments that had left him near death. After surgery, the zoo nursed him back to health with fish milkshakes. This, according to Control Station, Mark Hammond, N8MH reporting via the Amsat News Service weekly newsletter. Amateur radio Newsline’s Don Carlson, KQ6FM, tells us that since the failure of the first cell on the six-cell battery, ground controllers have been limited to simple commands for basic configurations. However, features such as telemetry collection and the Bulletin Board are not functional at this time. And now ground stations have discovered there is a second cell in the battery showing problems. The control team thinks that battery will be the next cell to go If that happens the probable result that their limited manual mode of operation probably will no longer be an option, and the mission might be considered over. Near-earth asteroid fly-by receiving opportunity The 400 meter diameter near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 will be making a 0.85 lunar distance flyby of Earth on November 8. Michael Busch at the UCLA Department of Earth and Space Sciences notes this may an opportunity for amateur satellite operators to observe the fly-by. Because YU55 will be so close to Earth, its radar echo will be detectable with even small antennas (~1 m^2). YU55's echo will be a slowly drifting signal with a bandwidth of ~1 Hz within a few kHz of 2380 MHz or 8560 MHz. This will present amateur radio operators an opportunity to receive the radar reflections off of the asteroid because of the big dish, big signals originating from Arecibo and Goldstone. Nov 8 19:15 - 19:30 UTC, Arecibo will be transmitting a continuous wave tuned to put the asteroid's echo at a constant 2380.000000 MHz at the Green Bank Telescope. Observers elsewhere on Earth will see the echo within 2 kHz of 2380 MHz, Doppler-shifted by the Earth's rotation. It will be slowly drifting in frequency and have a bandwidth of ~0.6 Hz. Nov 9, 01:30 - 02:00 UTC, Goldstone Deep Space Network facility will be transmitting a continuous wave tuned to put the asteroid's echo a constant 8560.000000 MHz at a second antenna at the Goldstone site. Other observers may see the echo shifted by as much as 6 kHz, and it will have a bandwidth of ~2 Hz.
