I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been reflecting. The Remembrance Day Contest is the quintessential amateur radio activity honouring all those who served and those who died in the service of our country. We celebrate ANZAC Day as well as Remembrance Day, in November but it is the special recognition of those whose interest in peace and occupation in war was radio and electronics. At times we lose sight of the those other people who fought in different ways. I met one amateur who joined the merchant navy and was rescued 3 times from sunken ships. We had the great army of civilians designing, refining and building equipment for the military forces - much of this to become radio surplus in the early years of peace time. We have heard the story of Florence Mackenzie, Mrs Mackenzie as she was known to her students learning Morse Code to aid the war effort. But there were hundreds of civilians who passed through similar doors to wear a uniform in aiding the fighting forces. The efforts of the YL sorority was shown on a new program on ABC TV just before ANZAC Day. "Girl's Own War Stories" recognises the efforts of the women who became nurses, auxiliaries to the armed forces, populated the land army and maintained Red Cross services as well as all war efforts. In remembering let us include not only the military but the broad range of our community who gave in times of peril so that we can enjoy today. I'm Geoff Emery and that's what I think.....how about you? CLUBBING - TO SUPPLY NEWS ITEMS:- email qnews@wia.org.au Ipswich & District Radio Club P.O. I’m Allan VK4FABR. Redcliffe and District Radio Club www.redclifferadioclub.org.au/ I’m Ray, VK4CF with news from Redcliffe & Districts Radio club. The club’s portable station, VK4IZ/p, in the recent VHF/UHF Winter Field-day was awarded 2nd place in the Multi-operator 8-hour section of the contest having scored 2000 points. Kevin VK4UH said that it was a big effort but well worth the effort. David, VK4DC and Peter, VK4EA have been busy building uhf transceivers to be ready for the next field day contest and possible moon bounce activities. The club has its regular technical talks on the third Monday night of the month however this month there are 2 talks. Next Monday night James, VK4TJF will give a presentation on RFI and the following week, Kerry, VK4FKGG will give a presentation on fibre optics. This will occur as the equipment for the fibre optics presentation was not available. The planned working bee to do the gutter replacement to the clubhouse has now been deferred to the month of October due to other activities. As this weekend is the Remembrance Day Contest, VK4IZ will be active from the clubhouse this weekend. So if you hear our club’s competition callsign, give us a call for those very important points. A number of club members have expressed a desire to undertake a morse code course. Whilst the format and times of the course have not yet been determined as yet, further details will be forth coming. Stewart, VK4TSB has been practising by himself and wants other with limited morse speed, up to 10 words a minute, to assist him in his learning. A big reminder that Jota is coming up in October and that about 30 members will be required to assist during the weekend. This is a major function of the club and showcases our hobby to the scouting movement. Club members will be assisting with kit assembly and other radio related activities during the weekend. Eric VK7NFI, and Wayne VK7NET, are doing the usual at Wynyard with the Table Cape lighthouse. After last years event, the Wynyard council offered to make available the lighthouse structure which is now open for inspection tours. There will be much opportunity to improve the antenna locations as the lighthouse is in the order of 20 m high. Dion VK7DB will be doing a first time activation of the Sandy Cape lighthouse on the rugged west coast. Getting to this remote location will be an adventure in itself as the only access is via about 20km of beach and tracks heading south from Temma. The event will be run on the 20th and 21st of August. Please drop in and give some support to these operators doing their bit to promote Amateur Radio and keeping the airwaves active. They will look forward to both personal visits and on air contacts. DISCUSSION POINT What use is an f-call? When I was learning to fly an aeroplane my instructor at the time told me that every pilot has to do something called "Going Solo", that's flying on your own for the first time. It's not the end of instruction, it's one in the path towards becoming a pilot. He also told me that this was true for pilots flying Cessna's, Boeing 747's and Space-Shuttles. The same is true for your f-call. The time you've spent learning how Amateur Radio works, where things are written down, basic etiquette and procedure are all designed to prepare you for the wider world of Amateur Radio. Your f-call license is the first step in the process of mastering this technical hobby. Think of your f-call as the keys to the front door. It's what allows you to participate at what ever level you'd like to. You can of course go on to get extra licenses, just like in flying, going solo is only step one on the way to the moon. The joy is in the process of discovering your niche in the path along the way. So, your f-call is but one aspect of your hobby. On the air last week, an amateur had purchased a radio which turned out to be not such a great bargain. Through trial and error you learn what this hobby is all about. Talking to like-minded people will help you find out what the tips and traps are. I realise that there are more than a few listeners who either haven't got their kit ready, or if they do, are afraid to talk and use it. Over the coming months a few of us are going to get together to come up with a way that you can participate on the air without being afraid to make mistakes. And I should also say that you should find ways of participating in events as they happen. The people turning up at those events come from all different walks of life, but they all have in common that they have an interest in this hobby of amateur radio. I'm Onno Benschop - vk6flab INTERNATIONAL NEWS With thanks to RSGB, Southgate AR Club, the ARRL, Amateur Radio Newsline, NZART and the WW sources of the WIA. 911 Special Event Station Look for special event station N3U/Flt93 (N3U/United Flight 93) to be activated once again between September 8-15th, to remind 'Amateur Radio operators world-wide' of the tragic events that happened near 'Shanksville, New York City and Washington DC on September 11, 2001.' According to one CHP Officer, she was arrested after allegedly placing more than 130 non-emergency calls to 911 dispatchers on one Wednesday morning alone. She actually used three different cell phones to make the 911 calls. ============================================================================= NEWS FROM ARNEWSLINE USA REMEMBERING THE FIRST DECADE SINCE 911 This coming September 11th will be the 10th anniversary of the al-Queda backed terrorist attacks of September 11th of 2001. These attacks felled the two World Trade Centre tower buildings in New York City and damaged the Pentagon when radical Islamic extremists high-jacked four United States flag carrier jetliners and crashed them into the two structures. Over 3000 American citizens were killed as well as a number of foreign nationals who worked in the twin towers buildings. Over the years there have been several ham radio operations in remembrance of those whose lives were lost in this senseless and wanton carnage. With this being the first decade anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 tragedy, we here at the Amateur Radio Newsline are trying to compile a list of radio clubs and individual hams who are planning any form of amateur radio memorial operation to honour those whose lives were lost that day. If you have plans to commemorate 911, please drop us an e-mail to Newsline at ARNewsline dot org and let us know all of the details. We in turn will list as many as we can on our website at www.arnewsline.org. Those whose lives were lost on 911 deserve to be remembered. We will do our part by providing web-space to list ham radio commemorative activities. It’s up to you to do the rest. ============================================================================= WEIRD AND WONDERFUL TEN COMMANDMENTS OF ELECTRONICS 1. Beware of the lighting that lurks in an undischarged capacitor lest it cause three to be bounced upon thy backside in a most ungentle manly manner. 2. Cause thou the switch that supplies large quantities juice to be opened and thus tagged, so thy days may be long in the world. 3. Prove to thy self that all circuits that radiateth, and upon which thou worketh, are grounded lest they lift thee to high frequency potential and cause thee to radiate. 4. Take care thou useth the proper method when thou taketh the measure of high voltage circuits so that thou doth not incinerate both thee and the meter, for verily, though hast no account number and can be easily replaced, the meter doth have one and as a consequence bringeth much woe upon the supply department. 5. Tarry not amongst those who engage in intentional shocks, for the yare surely non-believers and not long for this world. 6. Take care thou tampereth not with interlocks and safety devices, for this will incur the wrath of thy seniors and bring the fury of the safety officer down upon thy head and shoulder. 7. Work not upon energised equipment, for if thou doeth, thy buddies will surely be buying beer without thee, and the space at the bar will be filled by another. 8. Verily I say unto thee, NEVER service high voltage equipment alone, for electric cooking is a slothful process, and thou might sizzle for hours on end before thy maker sees fit to end thy misery and drag thee into his fold. 9. Trifle not with radioactive equipment les thou commence to glow in the dark like unto a lightning bug. 10. Commit thee to memory the words of the prophets, which are written in instruction books, which giveth thou the straight dope, and which consoleth thee, and thou canst not make mistakes. THE QNEWS WORK BENCH - the nuts and volts report - (Measure twice - Cut once!) IEEE 802.22 to use VHF and UHF TV frequencies The IEEE has recently released the new 802.22 standard for Wireless Regional Area Network (WRAN) using white spaces in the TV frequency spectrum. The IEEE 802.22 standard is designed to provide Rural Broadband Wireless Access using Cognitive Radio Technology. It uses VHF and UHF TV channels between 54 and 862 MHz and is claimed to have a theoretical range of up to 33 km. It is envisaged that subscribers would use directional antennas on the roof. IEEE 802.22 can deliver a data rate of up to 19 Mbps in a 6 MHz wide USA TV channel. Channel Bonding, using more than one channel for Tx / Rx, can provide greater bandwidth. A single channel might be able to support 12 simultaneous users in the coverage area. NZART InfoLine says an international effort from Region 3 bringing in Region 1 via the Intruder watch and various posts to DX Clusters and Yahoo groups eventually resulted in the Radio Amateur being contacted via the ARRL in the USA. Signal reports were received from Europe, USA, Africa and Australia and New Zealand (who heard it first and raised the alarm). The resultant HF DF hunt resulted in a solid triangulation on the USA states from Radio Amateurs from all over the world. Finally, we can only imagine a slightly embarrassed Radio Amateur within the US was contacted and the stream nicknamed "Dotty" ceased yesterday. Excellent collaboration throughout the Intruder watch organisations across Europe, USA and New Zealand, which could only have occurred with the support of the Radio Amateurs who participated in the hunt, providing signal and reports. One based on his favourite radio series at the time, the Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. He called it the Hitchhikers Guide To DX’ing and it was an overwhelming hit when it first aired back in 1980. As Marks writes in his on-line blog, there seemed to be so much to make fun of at the time because of the boring propaganda at the height of the Cold War. According to Marks, several segments of this classic series are now available for download from the Media Network Vintage Vault at jonathanmarks.libsyn.com. The rest says G8WGN, will follow shortly. Jonathan also invites everyone to browse through other material stored at the Media Network Vintage Vault and he encourages you to share your stories as well.
