Last week we told you of how Telstra had called on the ACMA to reclaim 1452 TO 1492 MHz, reserved for digital radio, advocating its return for use by point-to-point microwave services. Now we learn that Australia's peak rail authority is battling to protect billions of dollars worth of investment in the safety of national rail networks, which is under siege as the carriers scramble for scarce Long Term Evolution spectrum resources. Australasian Railway Association chief executive Bryan Nye said state rail authorities had invested $500 million in a unified national radio safety network dependent on the 1800MHz spectrum and that billions more had been slated for the project. But mobile-phone industry groups have targeted the 1800MHz band to be the international standard for next-generation mobile LTE handsets and equipment, and regulators and carriers are turning up the pressure to obtain as much of that spectrum as they can. If the railways lose the licences, it will set back more than a decade of co-operation and planning to modernise and unify Australia's rail radio network. For instance, the Indian Pacific, which passes from Perth to Sydney, needs 8 separate radio sets on board to manage signalling systems on its journey. It is said the ARA had requested an urgent meeting with Senator Conroy but so far there had been no response. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. One thing that identifies a community is the shared identity and commitment of its members. I like to think of the world wide hobby of amateur radio as a community. But like the motto of recent years, it is very much a case of thinking globally and acting locally. Our local radio club, or any club, is a community, a community of interest. How that community governs itself often defines whether it grows, remains static or drops off the radar. If there is a sharing of experience and knowledge and a willingness to include all people in the club activities, then perhaps we have made a start in growing our club. It is well recorded how the formation of self interest groups within organisations tend to undermine the homogeneity, the unity and purpose of the organisation. From organisational psychology, group dynamics, business studies and on and on the literature is overwhelming that cliques can spell the death of a group. It may not be even an obvious self indulgence within the clique but a lack of enthusiasm, a been there done that and it didn't work dogmatism that can do the damage. The alpha male who refuses to relinquish control can be equally damaging and we all know the saying that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP and I've been thinking. Looking in the mirror reminds me that age is catching us baby boomers. It is interesting to reflect that the generation of amateurs prior to us represented the golden age of home brew which culminated in the shops full of disposals gear in the 1950's. It was perhaps from this tradition, when amateurs still had access to 11 metres, with war time training that an attitude of "amateur purity" became indoctrinated but perhaps we can blame the semiconductor revolution for a bend in the road. That was the availability of cheap, low power radios becoming available and the PMG Radio Branch approved a limited number of frequencies in the 27MHz band. By the time Commonwealth Games were held in Brisbane, Citizen's Band Radio was a reality. As people sought more from their hobby interests, many people who cut their teeth on 27MHz and then 477MHz sought to expand their options by obtaining one of a variety of amateur licences. I don't know how many current amateurs cut their teeth with CB but it has certainly been the major pool of recruits over many years. As the numbers of people using CB seems to be well down on the boom years, I wonder where the next generation of amateurs will come from? With the success of last year's WIA National Field Day, now is the time to mark the calendar with 17/4/2011. Let's get out and show the hobby to the public. A group of 14 club members arrived back into Brisbane late Sunday night and in the early hours of Monday morning after a 3 day trip to attend the Wyong HamFest The group led by club president David, VK4DC, kept in contact all the way down via the 2 metre repeaters down the Pacific Highway. Doug, VK4MCD, along with several others made a few HF contacts whilst mobile as well. Mal, VK4UMS was also keen to try out his new vehicle on a long trip and despite one small hiccup all went well. Somehow or other, he left a pair of high voltage tuning capacitors at the venue. There were quite a few bargains to be had but from the reports the crowds were not as great as the last few years. By now we should all have marked on our calendars the John Moyle dates. Peter, VK4EA, is leading this year’s event & is looking for further volunteers on the Friday to help setup along with operators for the midnight to dawn shift Saturday/Sundays and with the clean-up on the Sunday. The club will be active on all HF bands and the club will be setting camp up on Friday 18th March at the Murrenbong Scout Camp at Petrie, camp site No. 6. The club will be using monoband yagis on 10, 15 and 20 metres and dipoles on the other HF bands including 160 metres. With the site so close to the Brisbane metropolitan area, it is ideal for visits by local amateurs either as day trippers or to stay & camp over night. The event is a BYO everything and the club will have its BBQ on site for cooking. For some in Mt Nelson it got unbearable and made 147.500 unusable at times. So the ACMA were called, they were very prompt and after some considerable investigative work the offending data transmitter was located then shut down until it is repaired. Thank you to the ACMA. Copper thefts on the rise It seems that radio amateurs may find themselves targets for so-called copper thefts. In the last two years the price of copper has risen by 300% with other metals also experiencing higher prices. We've heard from an amateur in Yorkshire who's been a victim of one of these copper thefts when all his cabling was stolen overnight. That included the coax and ladder line used for a G5RV antenna. Other amateurs are being encouraged to make sure access to cables is restricted and that their installations are as secure as possible. (rsgb) LASER POINTER HITS COCKPIT OF PHOENIX NEWS HELICOPTER A Phoenix news helicopter was the victim of an attack from the ground. This as someone shot a bright laser beam into its cockpit that was also caught by the choppers on-board camera. According to The Arizona Republic, authorities are currently investigating the incident and have yet to identify the perpetrator. The newspaper goes on to note that local police actually searched door-to-door in the area where the beam originated but so far have come up empty handed. A spokesman with the Federal Aviation Administration commenting on the incident said that the message here is very simple. If you want to engage in this kind of dangerous and irresponsible behavior, you can be caught and arrested. If caught, and Prosecuted the perpetrator of this stunt could face up to 20 years in prison. (ARNEWSLIME) NEW STUDY FINDS CELLPHONES AFFECT BRAIN WAVES A newly completed study indicates that electromagnetic radiation from the antenna of mobile telephones may be altering the way we think and behave. This according to an article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. According to news reports, researchers peered inside the brains of 47 healthy subjects using Positron Emission Tomography to measure the location and timing of brain activity by detecting signs that cells were consuming energy. They found that despite official skepticism including statements issued by the Food and Drug Administration that ' electromagnetic energy exerts any influence on nearby cells. The prelim study, led by a respected neuroscientist at the National Institutes of Health provides what other researchers are calling solid evidence that mobile telephone use has measurable effects on brain activity. It also suggests that the peoples attachment to its millions of wireless phones may be altering the way we think and behave in subtle ways. This extension of the 40 m band allowed IARU Region 1 to modify the Region 1 band plan. These changes became effective on 29 March 2009. JILA ANNOUNCES A BEW SOURCE OF TERAHERTZ RADIATION JILA researchers have developed a laser-based source of terahertz radiation that is unusually efficient and less prone to damage than similar systems. The technology might be useful in applications such as detecting trace gases or imaging weapons in security screening. JILA is a joint institute of the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the University of Colorado at Boulder. Its technology is a new twist on a common terahertz wave source. That being a semiconductor surface patterned with metal electrodes and excited by ultra fast laser pulses. An electric field is applied across the semiconductor while near-infrared pulses lasting about 70 quadrillionths of a second, produced 89 million times per second, dislodge electrons from the semiconductor. The electrons accelerate in the electric field and emit the terahertz waves. Terahertz radiation which fall between the radio and optical bands of the electromagnetic spectrum have the ability to penetrate materials such as clothing and plastic but can be used to detect many substances that have unique absorption characteristics at these wavelengths. Terahertz systems are challenging to build because they require a blend of electronic and optical technologies that are integrated to work together flawlessly. Their research could help build faster, more efficient communication networks, at least doubling the speed of existing networks. These first wireless radios can send and receive signals at the same time, this immediately makes them twice as fast as existing technology, and with further tweaking will likely lead to even faster and more efficient networks in the future. Researchers are working that if a radio receiver could filter out the signal from its own transmitter, weak incoming signals could be heard. Their setup takes advantage of the fact that each radio knows exactly what it's transmitting, and hence what its receiver should filter out. The process is similar to noise-cancelling headphones. It starred Michael Elphick as 'Norman' a radio amateur G4ESB who contacts a Round The World Yachtsman called Alec G4FLP/MM on 20mtrs. The RadCom article says that Peter Marcham, G3YXZ was technical advisor to the makers of the drama and ensured technical accuracy. Suprisingly the article comments that in striving to be authentic, the drama isn't as funny as a show produced by a comedian (Tony Hancock) who was popular in the late 1950's and early 60's. Perhaps the author wasn't aware of the distinction between a drama and a comedy. The article appeared in the September 1984 edition of RadCom. The Channel 4 programme is the only time Amateur Radio has been represented with any degree of accuracy on UK TV in the last half century. During the first week of the Conference Preparatory Meeting (CPM) for the 2012 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-12) of the International Telecommunication Union, held in Geneva February 14-25, delegates completed the drafting of nine pages of analysis of the technical and regulatory issues related to WRC-12 Agenda Item 1.23: consideration of a possible secondary allocation to the Amateur Service of about 15 kHz somewhere between 415 and 526.5 kHz.
